I've bought my mum some knitting wool - she loves knitting but hates spending lots of money on it! Last year we got our parents tix to a musical - it was the first time my parents and OH's parents met each other!

Another idea is treatments or a day at a spa. Sometimes a gift experience is better than a 'thing'.

Good luck and let us know what you decide.

I got my mum a pair of Swarovski crystal earrings - she wears very little jewellery but does like small stud earrings. Her house is full of ornaments and I wouldn't buy anything electrical unless she specifically asked for it. She is really difficult to buy for. She does like Thorntons Continentals but has lost a lot of weight recently and has been really pleased with herself, I'd feel guilty if I bought her choccies this year !:o

How about a gift voucher from her local hairdressers or her favourite local restaurant
  • I would love to have that problem - my mum died earlier this year and I'm still devastated

I used to like buying her treatments that spoilt her a bit, as she'd otherwise never have tried them - I bought her a facial one year which she loved, and another year a hand massage.
  • Chocolates and gloves, I know you shouldn't buy gloves but its what she wanted.

My mum always asks for slippers, so I got her a slippers and toiletries set from Asda, and a wheat bag in a velvet bag, also from asda. I've also got her a little diary.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • A Top Up TV 250GB recorder which comes with free Setanta Sports for 9 months (which about a tenner a month anyway). The box is £99 but I have a code for Tesco and £20 worth of vouchers from survey sites, so it should pay for itself eventually!
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!

so sorry to hear that - my mum has a flowering cactus that reminds her of her sisters and mum who have passed away, it doesn't flower very often (strangely enough, it flowers every time someone dies and it flowers every Christmas).

She also buys herself a huge bouquet of flowers to remind her of her loved ones who are no longer here.

Different Corner Your Mum into PCs & Photography? What about one of those photos-to-dvd-slideshow creator software packs.....is it called 'Ulead DVD Picture Factory' or something? Or some photo-touch up software?

Personally... I'd try and avoid buying something to do with someones hobby! I'm a photographer, and if someone bought be software like you'd suggested I'd be quite miffed. If you're a photographer, software and equipment choice is really, really personal. My other half admitted he was going to buy me a lens this year, however the one that he was going to buy would have cost him £150, whereas the quality of the lens' I work with now cost over £1000 each. I'm not ungrateful, but there's no point in buying a present I will never use!

If she's a photographer though, vouchers to somewhere like Warehouse Express would likely be welcomed - they're a real good shop for photographers. Or Calumet, another fantastic shop.

I'm really sorry to hear about your mum and know how you feel .... my dad passed away on the 8th December five years ago so Christmas is a funny time for us ... you want to be happy but miss the one who isn't there. Can only say that it does get better

Anyhow every year I get my mum the same things as she never treats herself - favourite perfume, slippers, a couple of books, chocolates and some nice showergel:D Its want she wants and what she likes.

My mum will probably be getting some face cream. She uses Clarins, so I save up my Boots points for it.
MIL has decided not to bother this year, so that's one problem solved
