So custardy do you admit, if the post officer is too lazy/can't be bothered doing Recorded or special deliveries it is common practise just to card the people.

This was proved to be happening in Manchester last year

sorry what are you asking me to admit?
i can only speak for what i do on delivery and what happened when i was in an indoor position
by its very nature delivery is done on a solo basis
if you have problems then i suggest you speak to the manager at a local level and escelate as required
SD items are issued to a person on a specific duty.so these have to be taken by the delivery person

read the card.anyone can collect as long as they have your ID
were open from 6.30am to 8pm
i can assure you hardly anybody bothers to come early.the office is open 13.5 hours yet you still get people running up at 8.10 ranting they need their packet

OK, I tried twice to have my OH collect a special delivery and they REFUSED despite having MY ID and signed card!!
Also our collecting office is only open 9am to 4.30pm Mon/Fri and 9-12 noon Sat and that's according to the card too!!

    I can read thanks :)

should have asked for a manager.
seems the callers office isnt versed in RM policy
i made no comment on your offices opening hours.
my point was opening earlier makes no difference to peoples collecting habits
if 13.5 hours isnt enough for an office which is on direct bus routes(every 4 minutes throughout the day) and has ample free parking then what is?

okies, lots of nice posts whilst i was at work today so i shall answer them to the best of my ability due to the fact that i have a stinking headcold, yes i'm a moaning postie, had to go out on a delivery today and then return to sort out the call and collect locker which is in chaos because i wasn't there and my poor little assistant was rushed off her feet, bless her....

    So to start.

Liam: "Fair enough the person who initially posted the letter is at fault, but then again isn't it your colleagues responsibility in the "sorting office" to "sort" that out?!"

Actually no, we endeavour to have posties on regular duties, so that they get to know the customers by name, therefore it's easier for the regular postie to know who wendy and jim are. The ones on the sorting certainly wouldn't know this.

Liam "Postmen should stop moaning about their jobs and get on with it like everybody else, at the end of the day if it was nurses or policemen complaining people might have some sympathy for you. But no, all you have to do is deliver some letters, and a lot of the time this is messed up, yet you have the cheek to complain all the time."

I actually registered for these forums as i googled the strike action and this came up, and i was sick and tired of ppl calling me a thief, lazy, blablabla. Yes if someone calls me these things i will complain :) And tbh, we're not actually complaining about our jobs but at some of the requests and things that we have to do, "leave my packet by the owl outside my front door" "to Jim and Wendy, such and such street, townname" and fyi that's not all a postie does is deliver letters, but if u think that's all they do then carry on with these thoughts....

Zenseeker my sympathies, it's a nightmare trying to get through to some of the offices even from internal phones. Unfortunately due to cut backs the call and collect offices are severely understaffed, for myself, i deal with the customers who are there in the flesh, the ones on the phone can always call back, not ideal but i've found out that this works best in our office anyhoo. Regarding the online applications for redelivery, those should be dealt with on a daily basis, however i would advise to wait 48hrs b4 requesting a redelivery as it can sometimes take this long for a packet to be returned to the delivery office. You should make a complaint to customer services or better, to the delivery office manager regarding this. He may not be aware that things are going this way.

Moneypooh as Custardly said: Different delivery offices are open at different times, the one i'm in is from 7-1pm. During the xmas period we have opened 6:30 - 5:30 but i spend most of my time there doing !!!!!! all as it's been so quiet, that's why they won't open them longer, but hey ho at least my packets are all nice n tidy  As for ure OH collecting ure item, that is totally within royal mail's policy and it seems u have a valid complaint.

D.Edna do u think posties like standing out in the rain to write a "Sorry you were out card", Ring the bell or knock the door, start writing the card, if it takes that long for someone to answer, then they are either in the shower or scratching their !!!!, yes there are exceptions esepecially ppl with disabilities, but again regular posties get to know who these ppl are.

I can't speak for other offices but it's certainly NOT royal mail's policy to encourage these kind of practices.

As for doorstepping items, i have never seen that done with anything in our town except for the free lightbulbs that the energy companies were sending out :o

but anyway, where's wullie with out dailly update?????

"jeez, it's not exactly exciting stuff is it?"... it's more exciting than sitting in a dull office moaning that the post is late..
Today not too bad..but i was in a day dream and put a bundle of letters for no 6 into no 4.. see we are not perfect..the gentlemen was very nice about it and had a laugh...some on here would have had me shot.. and a nice man opened his wallet and said "wait a minute postie i got a tip for you"...and the look on his face when the smallest change he had was £20 ..Ha Ha he should have checked first. Merry Christmas Sir.

Especially if it was a payslip and next door neighbour keeps all your letters and never RETURNS them. Has happened.

For your information, my day at work wasn't dull at all today - I had to go out into the pouring rain to deliver the mail to the right addresses cos the postie got the mail mixed up again.

So you had the cheek to accept £20 for not doing your job properly?

Did you follow the correct procedures about receiving gifts?
