angelfairy wrote: »to all you lovely ladies with experience as a mum, what direction can you point me in regarding routine with babies? do they/should they have one?
i remember watching a documentrary about a few different styles of parenting. i recall NOT liking the one where you put bubs down at a certain time, woke him at a certain time, not a lot of nurturing but bubs slept through the night very early. I do not like that as i do not like the bit where you can't nuture your baby.
or is it that you just go with what 'feels' right for you and bubs?
AF, I didn't follow any particular method, just took bits of what I thought were a good idea and went with my instincts.
Poppy has slept through since 8w (11pm-8am), 13w (8pm-8am) and now 6:30pm to 7:20am. The most important thing I learnt was to put baby down whilst they are still awake so they settle themselves and this has worked extremely well for us. I'm also not a dummy snob either (especially after reading about SIDS) so she has always had one at bed/nap times.
I also use key phrases - 'Good night Poppy, Goodnight Mummy, Goodnight' obviously for bedtime and I sing 'See you later alligator' at nap times! In the early days she would cry a little when I put her down but I would sit on my bed and sing to her until she settled and never leave her until she was asleep.
She has a nap for 1.5hr after breakfast and another one after lunch and then in bed by 6:30pm. And apart from me checking on her thought the night, thats it until morning.
It does take a while to get into a routine and the key is consistancy.

feelinggood wrote: »AF - I think I watched the same program. I was discussing it with my Mum, and I mentioned how I really liked the contiuum concept, and was going to look into it if I ever had kids. I was suprised that my Mum followed that same 'regime'! I wonder if that is why it interested me.
Bit more about it here:

If its the one called "bringing up baby" on CH4 I applied to be on it with Chris but he was due too early
the routines they used were one from the 50's similar to what Gina ford says in her book, Dr Spok (sp?) he said follow your instincts and continuum
I think I would have picked continuum if I'd have got on the show, I bet with the support of the "expert" I would have managed to b/f too!0 -
AF - I've always felt you need to let the baby choose it's own routine for (like Sami said) the first 6 months. Then once little one started eating foods instead of just breastmilk, we had him eating roughly on the same eating schedule we did. We've always encouraged early bedtimes - like 6pm - because it gives us time in the evening to relax a bit - and I'd rather have an early riser than a child that's up late in the evening. I need the downtime.
For naps and bedtime, we have specific routines that we've had forever. Pick up toys, change into sleeper, storytime (the same 5 stories for quite some time - but new ones after Christmas yay!), cuddles, toy cups at the foot of his cot as he sits and plays with them for a bit before going to sleep, and his musical boot next to the cot as he sticks his hand out of the cot and plays a couple tunes before going to sleep as well. (We tried putting the musical boot IN his cot, and he throws a wobbly and pitches it out - he wants it NEXT to the cot so he can reach it, thank you very much!)MSE mum of DS(7), and DS(4) (and 2 adult DCs as well!)DFW Long haul supporters No 210:snow_grin Christmas 2013 is coming soon!!! :xmastree:0 -

I forgot how much they sleep, Chris sleeps 7:30pm - 8:45am at the mo (my halo has slipped recently:o used to be 7pm-7am) and occasionally has a nap of about an hour but usually only if we're in the car and sometimes in the pram0 -
Sami and Trig have obviously got more baby patience than Mummy SB!

Sami that was the name of the program, couldn't remember it until you said. I am going to try and find out some more info about it and refresh my memory
SB - Thanks for your info. That is really useful. Just wonder if i am going to be able manage being a mum?
Triggles - I have liked the idea of setting an early bed time so you have time in the evening for yourselves and also to be able to get things done.
