Woolies - closing down sale tomorrow (11/12/08)

I didn't mean that people on THIS board were making up bargains - I meant the Woolies managers were making up bargains. For instance every year on Xmas Eve Woolies pulled huge amounts of items out of the stores and put them on shelves. Miraculously (perhaps because it was Christmas) this NEW stock was placed on shelf already pre-labelled as 50% off. Blatantly made up sale "bargains" that had NEVER been on sale at the full price in most stores.
In the current sale Woolies has been putting up 10% or 20% off, as if these were real bargains, but actually some of their chocolate had been INCREASED in price (e.g. Cadbury's Heroes had been £6.99 a tin in the 3 for 2 sale, but were increased to £7.99 a tin before the 20% off bargain appeared).
It is this supposed bargain creating that I was commenting on - it assumes that Woolies customers are stupid, which they are not.
Tomorrow though we will begin to see the real bargains - and I'm out at work all day so I'll miss it
Ah yes now i see
I hate it when they mark stock big huge 50% off stickers when really that is the price.2013 Sealed Pot Challenge Member #1960

Well i loved woolies i really did and im sad to see it go really, my friend worked there for 11 years and she is gutted about whats going on.
On the other hand its still got to sell its stock, its still got to try and make something out of this it may not be much but it will help to at least pay some of the staff before they are made redundant.
And yes we all enjoy a bargin especially at this time of year and ESPECIALLY this YEAR!!! I have been ther 3 times this week purely because everytime i go in there is something else that was not there before they are trying to get rid and given us a %off what more can we want.0 -
anybody know if woolies will be opening early tomorrow? or will it be normal time, i dont fancy standing outside in the freezing cold, i shall be heading to wellingborough just got dh to take kids to school and playgroup.0

Well, I gotta add my small twopennorth just to say that like many others I will be going in tomorrow (was going to town anyway) and if I get some great bargains then fab and if I don't then so be it.
I worked at Do-It-All (now Focus) when that closed down and we all got made redundant and whilst it was sad for the staff, at least we got the pick of the bargains!
On closing day EVERYTHING was £1, even drills, lawnmowers etc so we stocked up big style! If only there had have been eBay in those days! We certainly didn't think that the customers were vultures and thought 'good luck to them - better in their pockets than the administrators'
So I hope the woollies crew do the same and manage to get some nice cheap pressies. Like loads have said, there is nothing that any of us MSE'rs can do about the sorry situation, so whilst some of you are sitting at home or work and feeling bad about being a 'vulture' the rest of us will be out, hopefully with the Woollies staff and grabbing the best deals we can!
I have a friend who works there and also a friend who just lost her MFI job so fully sympathise - but she did get a brand new kitchen for £150!!!:eek::eek:!!!
So not all bad!!!
As for the earlier comment about 'there are plenty of retail jobs' - you'd be surprised actually. I'm at a huge new B&Q - the largest in the country allegedly, and we haven't hit budget for months - often being at least £100k down a WEEK! Whenever staff leave/get sacked etc they aren't getting replaced and we alone are 75 staff down and cannot afford to replace them.
We're all gonna have to become undertakers I reckon - no chance of losing jobs there eh?!!! :rotfl:0 -
Im going to the lakeside branch tomorrow morning, just not sure what time to go. do i go at a decent hour or get there early, luckily its inside so no waiting in the car hehehehe.0

It is a shame but what can we do really?? We all enjoy a bargin especially this time of year unfortunately people are going to lose jobs but at least we help to pay thier wages in time for xmas.
Woolies will be dearly missed its a childhood memory but recession is upon us.
Chuckley where is your woolies im coming down there!! 50% off everything is that all of them doing it on friday do you know??0 -
Oh bottom, I've gat take something back to Woolies 2mro! Its gna be mayhem!I'm getting older, and lifes getting harder!:mad:0

Pity about the so called "50%" off all stock Woolworth's sale - the pity is the two VERY small words in the top corner of all their sale posters - "up to". A lot of CDs and other goods have only 10% off them.
I heard many people walking about in my town talking about the great 50% off sale and many just hadn't read the poster closely.0 -
i think it's normal opening and later closing.... due to it being the run up to xmas.0
