OS Daily Wed 10th DEC 08

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for DECEMBER 10TH 2008. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning Cold here both outside and also in my head! sneeze.gif
I forwent the coffee this morning in favour of honey and lemon and a cold capsule.

OH very sad today having found out that she did not get an interview for any job she applied for. Makes you feel you are a bit worthless! She left a job to better herself and now can't even get a lower paid job because she is over qualified.... I blame the government as they are responsible for everything. :rotfl:
MEAT deals worth looking at: Leg of pork and beef joints in ASDA, super low prices per kilo and worth putting a big joint in the freezer for Christmas.
I got my turkey last night. 20lber for £20. figured it won't come down any more.

Work today and thne school governors meeting tonight, followed by the Christmas meal. Don't really fancy it, but I am sure it will be OK in the end.

Well cheers for now....

NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!

Bethebee sorry about your rabbits, one of my neighbours lurchers once managed to get into our hutch and got hold of the rabbit, unfortunatley we were out at the time, so discovered when we got home, next day she said i hope my dog did't ruin any of your flowers yesterday he got out and was in your garden , Flowers ! he did more than that . And since we've no place to go
    Let it snow

In my calendar today – a Christmas pud :santa2:

Beth, sorry to hear about the bunnies

Ivyleaf, the piggies are doing great. The babies aren’t babies any more, though I still call them that. Boris and Rambo have calmed down and act more like adults now (liveliest in the mornings and evenings, and they’ve found their fave spots to sleep) whereas Tiny Timmy Terror will forever be a baby – he never sits still, can’t decide where to settle (to the annoyance of his brothers, lol) and when you go near him, he goes nuts and tries to clamber on you. I’m sure he’s thinking ‘Oooh a human, pick ME, stroke ME. ME ME ME’ :D

I’m off to FIL’s early today. He’s having a stairlift put in 8.30am and wants me to shut the cats in the bedroom before the fitters arrive – he can’t do it himself  Wonder what the litter tray looks like today? I’m under orders to give mr troo a report on the state of the house this week, if it hasn’t improved then he’s rounding up his brothers to bully his dad. There’s no point him going on his own, FIL tells different stories to each of them when they visit. Oh OK, that was too polite, he doesn’t just alter the story a bit, he blatantly lies about EVERYTHING. He does it to me too – doesn’t he realize that me and mr troo actually live in the same house and sometimes we talk to each other? :D For example, he told me my one BIL was going to empty the litter tray on weekends, then moaned to me that he doesn’t turn up. I know for a fact that FIL told him ‘don’t worry about the tray, troo said she’d do it’ So BIL thinks I'm going round a few times a week to sort it out.

I only managed to list the contents of one freezer yesterday. I ended up emptying and cleaning it, then rearranging it three times :D I've decided not to list the other one (it's in the shed), I'll just add to the list as I bring stuff in for the kitchen freezer then when it's empty, I'll start a list when it's restocked. Quite interesting to see how much food we've actually got, while listening to the teen-troos insist 'there's no food' :rotfl:

I have no idea what I'm doing this afternoon, I might pop back here later to read everyone's posts for inspiration :D

Tru - good luck at FIL's

Bargainbird - hope you manage to catch up on some sleep soon

Another chilly start to they day ;) Well it kills the germs apparently :D

Work as normal today, then when I get home I'm going to sort my wardrobe out and make some more mince pies.

Tea tonight will be sausage and pasta bake. Made the packed lunches last night, so just need to iron DD's trousers.

Have a great day everyone (((((hugs)))))
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)
  • Morning all
Frosty here again this morning, no work for hubby, as BIL has to wait in for BT as his phone line is down.
BOW stands for Batty Old Woman, & before anyone feels I'm being cruel, she is at least 5 years younger than me, of relatively sound mind & has worked out that if she puts on her 'batty' act, her work will be distributed amongst the rest of us & she can go for a snooze in one of the archive rooms!
I have a new cooker & I'm delighted with it, I spent ages finding one that wasn't cheap & cr@@py but the best for the price. At least now I can cook Christmas dinner.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

    Morning everyone.

N9eav - I'm so sorry your OH didn't get the job. The perfect one will be out there somewhere, I'm sure. Like you, I blame the Government for everything; my DH said yesterday that it's as though they want Great Britain to ground to a halt completely, and I can't disagree with him.

I hope everyone is well but want to send (((hugs))) to Smoky, PenPin, Taplady's friend, Lesley, and BargainRZL's friend, Lesley, and all who need one. We've haven't had any news about LO so I'll be phoning her Nan today to see how she is. I've been waiting for her to contact me because I don't want to disturb the family at a time like this.

Well, it's really cold and frosty here but it's meant to be nice and sunny later.

DH has nearly finished painting the outside of windows; it seems to be taking ages but he has to wait for the temperature to warm up in the mornings and then he runs out of daylight (or the will to stand there freezing his socks off!) in the afternoons. I was on ladder duty yesterday; his ladder is not too good so I had to stand at the bottom holding it steady - it was freezing cold but I dressed up warmly and managed to read my book at the same time! Heaven only knows what the neighbours must have thought! I'm reading another Anne Tyler book which I soon got lost in and almost didn't feel the cold.

Dinner tonight is roast lamb neck fillet - it's quite cheap to buy and roasts beautifully in the Remoska. We'll have roast potatoes, the rest of Sunday's cabbage (the bit I would have thrown out a year or so back!), carrots and gravy with it. Pudding is undecided as yet - I get fed up thinking of puddings, sometimes, and run out of inspiration.

Our local village market is on today so, as DH is off this week, I'll take him along with me so he can carry the fruit and veg back to the car! The butcher's stall there is very tempting but I'm a bit loathe to buy meat from a market stall. It is very popular and looks spotless so I think I may try something - he always has a big crowd around him, so he must be good. Our brand new Woollies is nearby so I'll call in there. It only opened at the end of October and now it will be closing down; such a shame because it's proving really popular here in our little village.

Well, I've mioliered a bit too much so I'm off to put the BM and the WM on, then have get DH up.

Hope everyone has a good day and (((hugs))) to those who have any of the lurgies doing the rounds.

    KathyXX

Tru - thanks for today's Christmas song - one of my favourites. Hope everything goes well at FIL's - I think your tactic of taking all the brothers there at the same time is brilliant. If one of you took notes, FIL would have to stick to the truth!

    Morning all,

Cold and frosty here again today.

Off to w**k today, but its our xmas do, so will do no work, we are off on the ghost tour again and the same restaurant for lunch, at least I know it will be good :T . I am having baked blue cheese and chestnut cheesecake for a starter, and a ribeye steak for dinner, it is usually a very good restaurant, so that will be me sorted for the day.

I will do OH and dd chicken fried rice for tea, with the rest of mondays chicken. Not a lot of os will be done today, as I will be having a glass of wine at lunch  , will swish and swipe before work though, so it will be tidy, and we have a sainsbugs delivery coming tonight.

Hugs to The two lesleys, the little one, Catz friend and all in need xx

    Have good days all xx

    Morning all,

I've been putting up the house decorations today. I put the tree up and was going to get DGS to trim the tree but OS had today off and is looking after him tonight. He'll do it tomorrow. I haven't done a great deal this arv as I'm feeling a bit queasy. I think it's the heat. I cut out some felt ornaments and will sew them up later if I feel like it.

N9eav Sorry your DW didn't get an interview. Hopefully she'll have better luck next year.
Beth That's a shame about your bunnies.
Tru Never heard of that song. When I read it the song Let it Be by The Beatles sprang into my mind and now I can't get rid of it. Thanks. :D
bargainbird I hate when that happens. Hope you manage a rest later.
    Moiliere Great news about LO.
Think I'll go and sort tea out. <hugs> to those not well or have friends not well. Enjoy you day. Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • Morning all,

gosh, where is the week going?! Oh, oh, oh, - I've got a 3rd star!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Tru, I love that Christmas song too - much better than Cliff & Shaky! :) My DD's always moan there's no food too...so when I'm throwing stuff out from the fridge I offer them that! (despite trying to be as OS as possible & freeze/reuse, there are things that always sneak through....)
Kathy, hope the LO is hanging on in there. Hopefully no news is good news.
WSybil, what a horrible experience, he sounds very creepy. Definitely needs reporting to police & electricity company. (((hugs)))) to you.
Betheebee, how horrible about the rabbits :(
Diva, did you get your decorator sorted? Would be lovely to have it done for Christmas :)
N9eav, thanks for the tip re the pork in Asda, I'll have a look on the way home as I want some for Christmas dinner (along with a small turkey or turkey crown). Sorry to hear about your OH's lack of job, it must be incredibly frustrating. I'll finish my degree in the spring, but should have no trouble getting a job as it's a profession that doesn't always get the best press.... (social work). Although I have no intention of working in child protection, where there are not enough staff, no support, no money, no resources and incredibly high burnout levels. I ain't putting myself through that if the Govt can't pull their finger out to make sure people can work effectively.
    MrsMix & Redruby :hello:
Aussie, hope you feel better later, sit down & put your feet up!!!! And Tru made me have Cliff Richard & Shakin' Stevens in my head together a few days ago..... aaarrrrrggggghhhhhh.......

Training all day for me again, so lunch is provided. Probably a jacket potato (although if there's lasagne I'm opting for that!). And burgers in buns & chips for supper tonight as it's a typing night.

Stopped off at a new Mr T's on the way home last night, as my cupboards were bare. Spent £60 but included loads of YS bargains (which I'm not usually lucky enough to get). Got 3 tubs of king prawns, marked as being on 1/2 price offer at £3 instead of £6. Reduced to £1 each :):) I luurve king prawns... And a couple of mini 'posh' fish pies (think they're aimed at kids, but will do me for lunch at work) at 50p each, fresh parmesan cheese chunk at 70p, and quite a few other bits I was very happy with. (So my DD's can't complain there's no food now either, lol)

Positive vibes & special thoughts to all those who are very ill, and strength for their families & friends.
    (((((hugs)))) for everyone.

    Morning everyone
Defeated the ironing mountain yesterday, so washing and ironing up to date for a day anyway:j . Also got into town to do a bit more Xmas shopping, and go to Wilkinson's, the curtain rail we bought for the bedroom has not got enough gliders on it to hold the curtains right, searched all over for them, but then got a tip to try Wilkinson's and success (10 gliders for 90p) think they would put more on originally , also got some more paint, so DH is kept from getting bored;) . The bedroom is slowly taking shape:rolleyes: , totally sleepable but not "finished" IYKWIM, though we have improved from the 40's style light fitting (wire with a bulb on the end:D ) Today I have to look at sourcing some mirrors.

Still need to write the cards and put up the decs.

We had some shin beef cooked in some kidney gravy for tea last night, I love both kidney and liver but DH does not:confused: , but kidney does make lovely gravy so it was too good to waste and the shinbeef was great. I had mine with loads of veg (and minimal gravy) though DH had mash and YP with his.

Trying to decide what to organise for food this weekend, we are away with the 'van (mad I hear you say, but we are on electric hook up and the heating does work well).

Thanks for asking but I am fine Beth, just hit the wrong key, and then lost what I typed so had to start again hence the delay.

Can we add another couple of folk to the prayers list, a couple of our neighbours in Spain, though both live here IYKWIM, have had bad news one went in hospital for an operation to remove his voice box (cancer) and next door to them had been having chemo fand it is not shrinking so she has to go in for an mastectomy.

I don't know if you saw it but I mentioned late one night, that jayward was threatening to come over to Donny market again, if anyone else wants to join in a mini mini meet then PM one of us.

Pen-Pin, smokybabe, Mrs_Mix tristan, lesley's and all who'd like one :grouphug:
