Did I say the sponsored links bother me??????????

I do, however, get annoyed when folks don't know who pay their salaries!

You made a comment about it. I replied. At the end of the day, it is a good site and it is free for you to use. Sponsors may pay something, but sponsors etc will only be recommended if it is a better deal/offer at that time etc, so of course we'll click it if it is relevant to us.
My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.
  • I've reported abuse a few times and never had a reply nor has anything been done with regard to the offensive posts, one of which was racist.

I used to moderate on a large music forum and so while I can appreciate the difficulties in monitoring "30 paperbacks" per day, you do have people like myself reporting the abuse as we see it and board guides who could be given more "powers" so to speak.

I'm not complaining, just adding my two cents. ;)

Actually Abuse is VERY closely monitored by the MSE towers staff :) However they must get hundreds if not thousands of reports each day and they don't reply to most (any?) abuse reports sent to them - I know I report things a lot and the norm isn't to reply to people APART from the automated response to say it's been recieved. If you didn't get that then something along the line went wrong (technical glitches can happen :) ) and abuse didn't recieve your report. That might explain why it wasn't removed?
As for more powers to the BGs... personally I'd agree (well I would now wouldn't I? ;) ) - however given recent events I am sure a lot of people wouldn't find it palatable for BGs to get more power :)

In defence of keeping things as they are then the MSE staff DO work incredibly hard and it is rare that someone doesn't pop online of an evening - I remember when I first became a BG it was a rarity - not because they weren't dedicated but because the team was a LOT smaller :)

Oh and if you're not getting the message recieved for your abuse reports then please post about it on the issues board :) If they are not getting your abuse report they might not be getting other ones either and they DEFINITELY wanna know about that :)

You sure that mse isnt on a junk filter? As every time I report abuse I get an auto reply

And every report I have made is looked into - perhaps not always immediately but usually if what i have reported really is "abuse" its pulled within a few hours

The one time I did have to send a personal query about what was happening on the boards I was answered within 24 hours - cant grumble with that

    Thanks

As someone who has owned and ran a large message board with a large number of members, i know what it's like to have people moan about anything and everything. i can only imagine how much work and time and effort is put into this site and board by the mse team and martin himself. i take my hat off to all of you. this board is about 20 times the size of what my board was. i know exactly how much hard work it is run a board with only a few people to help. i was torn to shreads by members cause i didn't do things the way they wanted or didn't have time to reply to pm's because i acually had a life and work also to deal with.

so before people moan about things take a step back and think before moaning. i'd like to see some people in this thead do what the mse team does. then they would know it's bloody hard work!!!!

  • Sorry, should have clarified: I have received the automated replies to abuse reports, just nothing back from a person, and the posts/posters were left unchallenged.

As I said I worked on a very large message board myself and know full well how it runs behind the scenes, the amount of (unpaid in my case) labour it takes. It's not moaning to query things.

I do sympathise with being torn to bits by members. You will always have people who like nothing better than to stir sh*t. And I think, in this thread, the OP has made a very good point.

Perhaps that's the problem! Maybe they shouldn't be working 'harder', but 'smarter'.!

For instance, it has been suggested for so long now that the mispostings on SBDD and GRABBIT would be reduced if the WANNA board was moved over to the Shopping forum. But nothing happens so good old 'saintscouple' has to work like a Trojan moving postings to the right board.

It has also been suggested for eons that Newbies should not be allowed to post for a while to allow them to familiarise themselves with the routines and boards. But nothing happens on this either so we get many mis-postings from them which need moving or postings which breach rules (eg codes on GRABBIT) and need deleting.

Hmm, Newbies not posting for a while? Just on a specific forum you mean? A lot of people register for financial help and because they are in trouble (DFW board as a prime example). The board/site is set up to help people, not to hinder them.

The problem is creating a rule that would only apply this to ONE board or a couple... because I am sure you wouldn't want it to apply to boards like DFW? Making people who in some cases are actually suicidal wait a few days before posting their problems is not really a solution I would feel happy with and I doubt MSE towers would either... I would rather put up with the spam and incorrectly posted threads on all the boards than think for one second that we had put off a person trying to scream for help... Codes on board other than the codes forum seems to fade a little in importance to me when I see people pulled from the brink on board like DFW... and some of these threads have had Martins personal attention and replies as well as other people from MSE towers... yes they are busy - of course they are! And things like personal replies to some things do get put to one side no matter what the size of your forums is (and I to used to own and run my own forum so I know what it's like too and that was nowhere NEAR the size of MSE) but they make the time to hold out a hand to people in dire need... they are only human though (as are we all) and it's never possible to please everyone sadly :)
