I think there's some confusion here. Abuse is a separate team that deals with... well abuse.

MSE Andrea, the Websmaster, FOrum Manager and I look at the wider issues of the forum, and then my editorial team and I look at the bigger issues of the site.

There are many ways to filter info to us and lots of people use them.

Of course many ideas for the site are made in the forum, a few get through, but frankly we could spend our entire day x 50 replying to all. Personally I often see things, but then rather and go in and say as they are in some cases "thanks for your request but we already do it/ or its the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard" I tend to find it nicer to say nothing.

Of course arguments get noticed - they get appointed to abuse - and are dealt with . Yet the abuse team are totally seperate and that's all they do - deal with abuse.

A classic idea is the idea of banning newbies from posting. While not ridiculous. I have answered that at least 20 times over the years as to why I would never contemplate it.

And yet much as I supposed some "newer regulars" get fed up of "newbies" posting the same thing again and again, I have to deal with "newer regulars" making the same suggestions... There's a poetry here.

In a nutshell - the whole idea of this forum is to help them, and let them ask questions and to get them involved. We should welcome newbies with open arms - not see them as a nuisance. The number of people who'd never have posted in DFW if we'd made them wait. The site is here to help as many people as it can... even if they're new :)

Yet when I do see a genuinely new suggestions, that will help the board and fits in with MSE theory in a non-destructive way or that we have the technology to do easily. We always try and make it work.

  • EVERY time I have reported something to abuse, yhe offensive item/thread has been removed.

I had aoccasion recently to ask for a thread I had started myself to be deleted and it was.

I have in the past pm'd Martin and received a reply (although I wouldn't expect to if it had have just been something routine).

I totally disagree with the idea of banning newcomers from posting. Why does it matter if the same questions are asked, or posted on the wrong board? It's someone who needs help NOW, not in a week's time!

And from personal experience I can tell anyone reading this thread that does happen, and it happens very, very quickly.

  • At your place of employment, would you message the MD? The company owner perhaps?
Think of Martin Lewis as the owner. He cant be expected to reply to every message he gets personally (I'd imagine it's quite a few). One or 2 might catch his eye and he may reply but be realistic.
The moderators (his directors? Paid or unpaid, I dont know)must get loads of complaints/reports every day.
They cant do everything (read reported item, assess whether it's genuinely offensive/racist/bigoted/personal attack/threatening, delete post then reply to you personally to explain what thay've done and why).

I use the site for information and if I have any knowledge on a thread I see, I'll give my opinion or advice. If I see something genuinely racist, bigoted or offensive, I'd report it (unless it was aimed at me as I think I should be impartial).
If you reported something on ebay for any reason, you would get an automated response telling you they would look into it and would not get back in touch. Does the automated response state that they wont get back to you?

I think you're too generous here. I've only once reported a post which was aimed at me, but I didn't hesitate to do it. I did say it was aimed at me, so abuse could decide if I was being unreasonable, but I wasn't. ;)

In My experience of this, forum abuse of any kind that gets reported is dealt with fairly and promptly, which considering the scale of abuse that goes on in the threads, is no easy task.

Whenever I see an abusive or offensive post, I always report it, no matter who the attack is aimed at. In every case I've dealt with (and there are many), it has been noted and dealt with accordingly, as soon as is possible by the team.

They are a very close knit team, who as you can see, do pay attention, going out of their way at times, to reply in acknowledgement (as seen in this any many other threads).

The fact that at least most of the regulars, can pretty much name each BG or MOD, including the owner Martin Lewis, all of whom have at some point socialised with the MSErs, shows IMHO the pride they take in their jobs, as well as the care and appreciation they have for us, the consumers.

Everyone is new at some point and the majority of new people post in a way that is not offensive or abusive. There are also a lot of one post wonders who dont stick around but that is their choice. Banning new posters would not be fair.

Every now and then there is new poster who is abusive or even some older ones who should know better. Sometimes its easy to get sucked into a debate and a slur or slightly abusive comment and react but I dont so much have an issue with those as they are storms in a tea cup and after that its over with and back to normal and the regulars carry on as if it never happened.

The worst ones are those with chips on their shoulders and stalk other posters from thread to thread and post snide remarks, often at a level that wont be picked up by abuse or dealt with by abuse if reported. I find the abuse team with those people are not as good as they only see that particular post and not the others that have gone on for days, weeks or even months before. Even when its pointed out that its a continued attack over multiple threads it is a bit hit and miss as to whether action is taken.
