I know, new licences stop in Feb 09, looks like we all have to move on.
In part, it derives from the unholy (and unhealthy) mutually-parasitical alliance between PC manufacturers and Microsoft: Microsoft holds them to ransom on licence fees for its operating system and in return Microsoft promises them that it will keep making changes to it that will oblige the public to keep having to buy new computers.
