I'm sure it's ment to be a lighter footprint, something to do with Linux taking the market of Ultra-small laptops. They cant keep providing XP for ever

I haven't checked out Windows Server 2008 yet, used to heavily use 2003 Enterprise. Is 2008 closer to Server 2003 or Vista?
Edit: Ah, Server 2008 is built on top of the Vista kernal.

In part, it derives from the unholy (and unhealthy) mutually-parasitical alliance between PC manufacturers and Microsoft: Microsoft holds them to ransom on licence fees for its operating system and in return Microsoft promises them that it will keep making changes to it that will oblige the public to keep having to buy new computers.
