Mike, as I am genuinely interested (I've tried and failed linux before, but I'll doubtless try again) are you suggesting that on my fairly good PC I will be able to run modern games, such as Crysis and Call of Duty WaW the same as in vista (dx10 etc..), if you are, then I'll add another (suggested) distro to my download client, for now I have a vista liscence, but one day I'll be letting it expireUtinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.0

Windows overall and XP have lost Marketshare, Vista has gained marketshare. So Conor would be correct.

I like the look of vistas GUI, compared to Windows XP, blue and green what were they thinking

I take it Windows 7 will have the same sort of look. I've seen some screen shots of it, it looked like the KDE desktop? or at least it was customised to look like that.
Yes W7 will have a similar GUI to Vista, although I personally think it looks better (I don't know, more airy?) Also on the KDE front, from what I hear they will have some similar sort of aspects, but won't be TOO similar.2.66GHz Intel i7 920, Socket 1366 (B) Nehalem

Ok I'll give him that Vista has gained market share from its release, but that's not really a fair comparison. You can't compare a single OS to a kernel on which many OSs are built. Therefore, the comparison should be Windows and Linux.2.66GHz Intel i7 920, Socket 1366 (B) Nehalem

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.
Goodnight.
Yes I am. It is based on the Windows Server 2008 kernel.0 -

Of course Vista is going to gain market share, it comes pre-installed on most windows computers now. When someone buys a computer with Vista they essentially buy vista.
Besides more people are going to buy a PC as they would be more compatible with work/school0 -

No of course you won't run them under their DX10 modes as support isn't available for WINE. You can run many modern games at a decent rate (remember WINE Is Not an Emulator), but it's all down to preference. If you are more interested in gaming and doing so with absolute maximum abilities, then you will obviously need to run them natively - that goes with all non-nativity.
If gaming is purely what you want, then dual boot can also be your friend to get your fill of Linux goodness

According to whom? Oh yeah, Netstats which gets its figures from its 9000 partners who peddle ads on websites. Well I for one don't see them because I have an adblocker so according to Netstats, neither of my two Vista computers exists. And if you don't actually visit a site that has ads served by these partners, your computer won't exist either apparently.
If you're going to use a source, at least use a decent one that aggregates data from several sources including Netstats. Wikipedia has such a page.0
