Well, assuming you just have to use Windows, you shouldn't waste your time waiting on some hypothetical future product which may or may not be released in 12 months.
  • It's more than likely going to be released around this time next year, however as with any operating system there are going to be initial teething problems which is why a large percentage of people will wait and gauge the general reaction before jumping in feet first.

You can pick up Vista Home Premium OEM for about £50 now, so if you are wanting to upgrade to Vista it's not going to break the bank.

Personally, if you are wanting to go to 7 then I'd go to Vista first so the new features introduced aren't a massive culture shock to you.

Even when 7 is officially released, it'll probably be many more months if not years before at least one service pack makes it a useable product. Don't forget, Microsoft like to use the public to continue their Beta testing long after a product is released.

I'd stick to Vista. I've only just bought my first Vista laptop and I have to say, although I'd made up my mind I wasn't going to like it, I'm finding it very good indeed. So far, I've only had one old bit of legacy software cause a problem when installing, but that was soon solved.

If you've had any hands on experience with any of the builds at the moment you'd realise that these are solid and well performing builds, even for pre beta.

As soon as Microsoft release any operating system, they are at the mercy of hardware manufacturers to be releasing quality drivers, otherwise another repeat of the Vista launch will happen. Since architecturally 7 is built up on the codebase of Vista, there are going to be few issues with compatibility. The main hardware manufacturers are more prepared this time and already putting out good drivers.

As long as you're not trying to shoehorn either Vista or 7 onto a machine that blatantly isn't going to be able to handle it then you're going to be on a smooth upgrade path.

Ask the question Do you really NEED Vista? If you want to play Direct X 10 games you will need it along with more RAM possibly a faster processor. If you don't why not hang fire with XP until Windows 7 requirements are more concrete. After all it is about money saving.

If XP works, stick with XP. If you want Vista, get Vista. Windows 7 is based on Vista so it's basically going to be Vista with a few GUI changes and tweaks.

Vista is absolutely fine. If all those who !!!!! about it actually tried using it instead of regurgitating the same misinformed rubbish, they might find they change their minds. It's also amazing that they think their arguments are something new when it's exactly the same that was being said about XP when it was released.
  • Im not upgrading pc, Im thinking of buying laptop guys, thats why I dont want to buy one now and then have microsoft release a new OS, that will just !!!! me off. I always like to have the latest stuff, just bought an X1 phone, but I didnt want to jump on the Vista bandwagon cos of problems, but now they are sorted out, I read that windows 7 is coming soon as microsoft want to forget about the vista seeing as it was a disaster with the public and businesses.

im a student too so dishing out 500-600 on a vista lappie, i will want that laptop to run for at least 4 years until my uni finishes, but if i buy vista now, then that isnt going to happen is it? seeing as microsoft will concentrate on windows 7 making vista invalid, or am i getting it all wrong.

sorry if being fussy, but I bought a pc worth 1200 back in 2003, so this pc has run for 6 years with no problems, thats what i want....
  • Windows 7 isn't being rushed to brush Vista aside, it's back onto the release schedule that should be in place but went awry between XP and Vista.

Windows 7 will run on the same hardware that Vista will run on, and in many cases there is a significant performance increase between 7 and Vista.

I wonder if you'll be able to do an upgrade with existing software and drivers working after....

I would have thought so. I upgraded a 2 year old XP installation with all my games and apps to Vista when I got it through my MSVP subscription and apart from having to uninstall Nero, had no issues. Obviously drivers needed updating as it was a completely different driver model but I would imagine Vista to Win7 will be quite painless.
