whilst providing a car is reasonable (legally they should put the owner in the position he would be in if the incident had not occured), adding in a different requirement (bigger car) changes things. £750 does not sound reasonable to me though.

The garage have sent a truck for the dead car, I assume if it turns out to be their botch job - fix it, and provided a loaner.

Why should they also give someone who's not even the owner of the car £750??

Compensation is not something that is automatically due in every trivial situation...

theres a helpful bloke called titherev who works at vw

i would speak with him also
  • I would be speaking to VW Head office if i was you. Normally if your car has been in for one reason or another they phone you to ask if the service you recieved was a good standard, quite a few times i've said no and then my locla vw garage rings me up and books my car back in.

What a terrible situation for you to be in! I have broken down on the M6 before at staffordshire services well i was in the outside lane and my clutch went i somehow managed to get it onto the hard shoulder just before the services and was sat there a total of 9 hours before we got rescued and in that 9 hours no one stopped to ask if needed help, not even the highways agency!

I hope you get it all sorted soon.

I think approaching CAB is a good idea, though in the meantime, how about emailing Honest John with a summary of the situation, he normally replies within a couple of days with useful, common sense advice & it's possible he'll have a contact at VW Head Office (he relayed a problem with a moronic Renault dealer to someone at their HQ for me a while ago which was a huge help):

OP - have had a brief read of your problems and have a response.

It shall, alas, take me a good half hour to post, so I will do it tomorrow due to my usual Saturday lcohol intake far exceeding the government's RDA for the week.

  • So the car broke down on saturday.

You took the car to VW on the monday, and by the tuesday they had agreed to fix it and had supplied a courtesy car.

    Seems very good service.

Re the insurance, since your father was the customer and not you asking for an increased excess seems reasonable

Your making a mountain out of a molehill, it was unfortunate and they have sorted it.
