Thanks for the comments, and the additional info Bart. I was on the M6 and doing 70mph so I would expect there to be a lot of damage. I'll need to note all this stuff down and ask the garage if they've checked all these, looks like a bit of crammng....

I have spoken to a few car mechanics and their opinion is it is better practice, and probably cheaper in labour terms, to replace the engine totally.

He's lost ALL confidence in the garage and wants to get someone to inspect it afterwards. They've lost one customer for sure and as we know a fair few folk with VW, I am sure they'll miss a few customers now.

I may ask what work they have done when Dad gets the car back, in fact I'll probably go with him to collect it.

Since they've put their hands up and repaired your fathers car for free and given you a loaner, why would you go else where???

What more could they have done??

Valves a few pounds, head a grand.
    Labour two grand plus parts

Head under a grand - alot less labour.

  • It would make economic sense to replace it

    How so??

    Engine £5k

    Valves £100

Next you'll be saying that OP's dad should be getting a new car for free....

They put their hands up to their mistake.

    Obviously you never make mistakes.

Garages own labour next to nothing.

Or do you know more about repairing VWs than a VW main dealer?

We do extensive repairs where I am - and yes, probably do know alot more than they do.

Sadly we have had a few folk with cam belt failures recently and I have to price everything up.

We are also very fair - and we always give the customer the option of which way to go about it too - and the cheaper option, generally, is to go for new head etc. The labour involved in repairing, sending head off for crack test etc etc. is very very time consuming, the car is also off the road alot longer too - and could mean that the customer has to hire a car in the mean time.

You have to way everything up - and treat each case individually, work out the best deal for the customer from all angles.

We really care, you see, we're not main dealers.. ;)
