What about the comment that it wont run quite as well as it did before if the engine isn't replaced? I went to the garage yesterday and they accept all liability and send them a letter regards my expenses incurred.
I will be 'cf'ing it to VWUK and the dealerships head office too.
They said they had never seen a cam belt like it before, recognising the fact that it had "melted" and was shredded.0 -
Really cant see why it wouldnt run as well? All the effected parts (which essentially will be the top half of the engine) are part of the head. The timing of the valves will have been effected and that may have bent them and even damaged the pistons or head itself, but nothing below that will be damaged. When the valves hit the pistons they could shock load the crank and put a flat spot on the big ends and crank main bearings ( these are soft so would suffer if the engine was running at "motorway" speeds) Also the con rods could bend!
The amount of damage done will depend a lot on the engine revs at the time of the cam belt failure, at tick over (aprox 750 rpm) usualy little damage is done, at 5000 rpm it's usualy the end!
Not all engines work well after head removal, the vw turbo diesel as fitted to the VW LT and Volvo 7 series is one.
I hope the garage repair your fathers car properly this time and don't leave you out of pocket.0 -
Thanks for the comments, and the additional info Bart. I was on the M6 and doing 70mph so I would expect there to be a lot of damage. I'll need to note all this stuff down and ask the garage if they've checked all these, looks like a bit of crammng....
I have spoken to a few car mechanics and their opinion is it is better practice, and probably cheaper in labour terms, to replace the engine totally.
He's lost ALL confidence in the garage and wants to get someone to inspect it afterwards. They've lost one customer for sure and as we know a fair few folk with VW, I am sure they'll miss a few customers now.
I may ask what work they have done when Dad gets the car back, in fact I'll probably go with him to collect it.0 -

It would make economic sense to replace it - but who knows what they will do - I'm very cynical about main stealers these days. Their attitude leaves alot to be desired. And yes, I know, one shouldn't generalise..Genie
