Ah ha! I've found my tin and in it I have:
- Onions - open and didn't do very well last year
- Parsnips - open
- Iceberg lettuce - open and I will be sowing LESS of these this year
- Carrots - open
- Beetroot - open and I hope to be planting more of these than we need so I can make pickled beetroot for Xmas gifts :shhh:
- Cabbage - never grown before
- Spinach - never grown before!
- More parsnips - different variety and slightly longer season
- Tomatos - Moneymaker variety. Will not be planting as many as I did last year of these either!
Creeping back in for accountability after falling off the wagon in 2016.Need to get back to old style in modern ways, watching the pennies and getting stuff done!0 - Onions - open and didn't do very well last year

I'm definetly going to grow courgettes and tomatoes as they did well last year. I might not bother with potatoes as they take up too much room and are cheap to buy. I'll grow chilli's and peppers again.
I might try french beans this year.
I dug the plot over last spring, removed the weeds and dug in a small bag of manure. Should I be doing any more than that this year?
Last year the lettuce was a failure as were the carrots and garlic. I presume I need to add something to the soil but I don't know what???0 -
Last year I grew tomatoes, chillies, peppers, and cucumbers in the greenhouse.
Lettuce, rocket, radish, spring onions, beetroot, raspberries, rhubarb, runner beans, onions, broccoli, peas, leeks, carrots, parsnips and winter cabbage in the garden. In fact we had the last of the leeks and parsnips with our Christmas dinner
Will grow the same this year plus I would like to grow blackberries as they are one of my favourite fruits"You can't buy love, but you can pay heavily for it." Henry Youngman0 -
Hi
I try to buy seasonal fruit and veg as its cheaper. My DD likes carrots, cabbage and lettuce....and thats about it. She will try most things, but know she will eat these. How easy are these to grow?

Hi All
My partner has an allotment (£35 ish a year), so this year we (he) will be mostly growing:
Beetroot - we pickle loads - btw if you have a greenhouse or cold frame, we set ours off in seed trays in there, then transplanted to plant pots, and finally outside.
Garlic
Onions - red and normal
Leeks
Potatoes - many varieties
Sprouts :xmassmile
Broccoli
Kale? (Sea Kale if we do)
Beans - runner, climbing, broad, borlotti, kidney, etc
Peas
Tomatoes
Augergines
Chillis
Sweetcorn
Carrots
Parsnips
Swede
Turnip
Courgettes
Pumpkins
Squashes
Strawberries
Conference Pears
Apples - cooking and normal
Blackberries
Raspberries
Gooseberries
Blackcurrants
& Salad stuff, eg lettuce, radish etc
Btw, to whoever said they pay 2.50 for the allotment - where in the country are you? We're in North Yorkshire and we're paying loads more. No fair!
MethererNot heavily in debt, but still trying to sort things out.

If you look in the Food section of the MEGA Index sticky you'll find a group of threads listed under "grow your own" that will be well worth a browse.

Ken68 wrote:Hi Calley...I got into foraging last year, amazing what is out there apart from mushrooms.....Saved £100 p.a. from not buying fruit........blackberries, cherries, hazelnuts, wild salad stuff..no end to it......Plus the veg on this 'NO DIG' garden.
Yes, that is fine as long as you know what you doing with things like mushrooms. Otherwise it can been fatal. To me which is not moneysaving at all.

I've got strawberry plants and a couple of garlic plants which I bought in from outside when it snowed and put them in my porch which is pretty cold. I'm not sure if I should have left them out though.
Anyway, this is a first for us, I was inspired by the gardening threads last year, so OH has prepared a fairly small veg patch, as we only have a small garden anyway.
I have alpine strawbs in a pot outside and also a patio eating apple and a patio cooking apple in tubs outside too.
I plan to grow:-
rocket, cucumber,cherry toms(in a tub),ordinary toms(in a growbag),carrots,lettuce,runner beans,potatoes (these will have to be in a bin) dill,sage,mint and parsley (in another tub)
I also have sweet peas,(my fave) sunflowers, and a few other flowers.
I was only looking through the seeds yesterday because I received a free packet of rocket seeds (via the freebies board) OH said its too early, but according to the packets a lot can be started now, so Im glad to see this thread!
I've also got a mini plastic greenhouse type thing to start them off in, and I bought all my seed trays etc in the Wilkinsons sale last year, when I bought the seeds.
I'm looking forward to it now!0 -
nothing as we hope to put our house up for sale soon, good luck all you growers:love: married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090
