Definately salad as so easy! Also courgettes were very successful last year and I still have a good supply in the freezer. Other than that runner beans and blackberries again but would love to put some currants in.

I have got an alotment and I'm a 33yo girlie. And what I ain't gonna grow in there ain't gonna be worth growing anyway. This will be my first year. Cost me £2.50 per year.
I am so keen I walked down there on boxing day to have a think and a bit of a dream about all the beautiful fruit and veg I am going to have.

Oh veg gardens, I LOVE EM!

We have a big garden were we are moving to, about 90ft by 25/30ft and it is south facing. WOO HOO!!!

Can any of you tell me where I should dig the garden.ie.which corner? I also will have a compost heap or 2. Am debating and open one for ease of turning but am unsure about rats etc.....is is closed one better???

I fancy growing cherry toms, lettuce, broccoli, cauli, sweetcorn, peas, spuds, carrots, maybe radishes, beans..oh the list is endless.

We move at the end of Feb, is that too late to get started on digging? It is all grassed over at the mo so will need a lot of digging to "umcompact" it and some well rotted compost/manure dig in as well.

    All help appreciated.

We've just moved house and are planning to start growing our own fruit & veg. If we have success with growing things we are then going to look into an allotment as our garden isn't that big( we are in our early 30's too). Currently attempting to grow garlic, chillies and peppers(my favourite)both plants are flowering but whether they grow anything remains to be seen.

Kiwichick, I am so jealous of your new garden. Used to have a large south facing garden and it was totally glorious. I moved house and while my house is about 3 times the size of the last one I now have a horrible tiny north facing garden. What could I attempt to grow which might stand half a chance in shade from about midday forward?

I'm not sure if my soil is acidic or alkaline, but it is terribly heavy clay. Does anyone know how to test the pH of the soil without having to buy one of those kit things?

Even if I can't grow veg I would like to at least get a bit of colour going so suggestions for pretty and long lasting flowers would be appreciated too.

    Thanks all.
  • I shall be growing most if not all of the following plus one or two new things…. :p

    Tomatoes
    Cucumber
    Lettuce
    Spinach
    Beans
    Onions
    Beetroot
    Carrots
    Broccoli
    Parsnips
Various herbs, parsley, a few peppers and garlic
    Blackberries and raspberries

I may try one or two types of chilli this year in particular Jalapenos as they are very good for pickling I’ve heard. At the moment I’m extending the veggie patch, giving it a really good makeover, lots of good horse muck and making it into a raised bed type of area. Gosh… I’m getting really excited now… la la la…. Hee hee. :D

I'm going to have to dig my tin of seeds out it would seem... I know there are sweet peas in there (distinct lack of flowers last year which resulted in complaints from OH) and some "moneysaver" variety tomatoes - will need to look into what I need. I know I need a very large sack of compost at the very least, not to mention needing to divide the beds up this year and put a path or two in so I can reach the back corner of my corner bed without getting "muded up"!
