The credit would normally say Company Name £2,000 on your statement. What does your statement say on the line for that credit?

If you go to the early posts, I have outlined what my statement says and the steps i have taken this far.......... if you want to have a nosey.
Anyhow the credit on my statement states - 'ACCOUNT ADJUSTMENT'
But Abbey could not give me an answer on the phone what that meant.
When I wrote they outlined it was monies received from BIRMINGHAM MIDSHIRES

technically if someone put funds into your account without you asking for it then its yours as they call it unsolicited payment. However legally they will come after you for it. Looks like you have done everything in your power at the moment so jsut put it in a high saving account dont touch it and wait until you are asked for it. If a company has made a mistake then they will come back and ask you for it via your bank and you must give what is known as debit authority for this to happen. Then just move it back to the account you are debiting from and they will take it out. Not sure how long legally you have to wait before its yours.

I work for a company which has had to take legal action twice to get funds back paid into wrong accounts where people have given the wrong account number it’s a long process and we always need to get the legal department involved.

but the money has been in my account now for 4 weeks.......... I would of been tracking the money down if it was me!!
    Thanks guys!!

Might be someone paying into a savings account mate.... 4 weeks is not a long time if they get monthly statements or even don't get statements, they might not notice the money missing for months or ever.

A current account would be different and they may well have noticed quicker.
  • I'm in a similar situation. I had 3 amounts credited to my HSBC current account on the 20th Nov, they total ~£1430. The credit states 'Nostro account'.
When I called my bank they said the following:

    1. it was an a creditor who hadn't left a name & therefore they personally couldn't be traced - I'm thinking yours might/ should be traceable?
    2. the credit originated from citibank - I do not have a citibank account
    3. if it wasn't mine do not spend it or MOVE it - if it was a mistake the creditor can reverse the transaction without notice, leaving me with a lot of clearing up to do!
    4. if I wanted to get rid of it myself (legally!) I could either ring citibank & ask them to take it back OR take a written statement into my branch asking them to withdraw it...

I don't fancy asking citibank to do it as I don't know them & they don't know me.
Why they can't reverse it with my permission over the phone I have no idea. Getting to my branch is a real pain so I haven't done anything yet. It's all still sitting there winking at me!
Don't fancy looking at it for the next 6 years though...:D

That sounds like an internal adjustment from Abbey, for whatever reason, and not a credit from an external source.

Bingo - thats it, i did indeed enter a competition , one of those comps with a selection of prizes ranging from a 1,000,000 top prize with a boobie prize of a special gem that looks like a piece of glass. that must be it!!!!;)

i can rest well now - thanks. lol

How convenient. So you are in the habit of filling in your bank details on dodgy competition entry forms then, I take it?

And you really think that competitions like this will pay out via bank transfer, labelling the transaction as "Account adjustment"?

If so, then let me tell you about this wonderful investment opportunity that I have - just send the £2k to me and I will put it into a my Magic Beans fund that will guarantee you a 50% per annum return every year.

So ....... technically .......... if someone takes money out without you approving it then it becomes their money? And it's now an 'unsolicited debit' ..... no longer 'fraud'. ;)

I wonder what would happen if you accidentally transferred money into someone else's account? How much help would the bank give you to take the money back? I wouldn't be surprised if you was told there's nothing that could be done.
