Don't take it outside of the bank. The risk doing that is they'll debit it back without any word, possibly leaving you overdrawn without authorization, DDs bouncing, etc.
If, for whatever reason, they don't come looking for it in the next six years, it's all yours!
Totally agree, keep it within Abbey and check your bank every day to see if it's still in there. If they've taken 2K out of that account and the account is showing overdrawn, you can easily transfer it back from the savings account you put it in.
My mum got 1.5K paid to her by Child tax credits and they told her they'd take it out of her next payments, well I was 17 at the time (the youngest), so she only had a few more payments, but they didn't care! She made over a grand because of their mistake!0 -
I would definitely leave the money in your Abbey account. I had a similar experience with them a few years ago. Over £2000 appeared in the account - from an overseas source (slightly different to yours I know). I phoned them and they insisted the money was mine - I told them it wasn't. Typical of Abbey - wouldn't do any investigating but gave me the telephone number of the bank who had paid the money in. Quite rightly, they said they couldn't give any details to me because of Data Protection Act. Went back to Abbey several times - no joy.
What a surprise, a few weeks later received a letter telling me they had taken the money out of my account as it had been paid to the wrong account. No apology - no notice. Luckily I had left it in my current account. Yes, I know, I could have argued it out with them if I had moved it into a savings account and ended up with charges for being overdrawn. However, as most people who bank with Abbey will confirm, phoning them is an absolute nightmare and I'd already spent enough time trying to tell them it wasn't mine in the first place!0 -

Thanks for your comments, and that is all of you who have.....................
I phoned Abbey today, waited about half an hour-
I explained that there seems to be an error on my account I wanted to to resolve the issue before it got bigger blah blah blah.
The person on the phone took my deatils and highlighted that there was no error with my account. I explained that just under 2k had appeared in my account from nowhere and the deatils were 'ACCOUNT ADJUSTMENT' - Abbey said thats correct whats the problem.
I asked what it meant by 'Account Adjustment' - The answer was inspiring - they said 'Abbey had adjusted my account'.............Thats it, no further details.
I tried to explain that I dont know why the money is there!!! They just said wait a while and things may become clearer.....................
Amazing............................
Leaving it in my current account........:rotfl:0 -
Wow, I wish Barclays would just decide to deposit £2k into my bank account !0

Yeah the phone support is shocking.
I really cant beleive it...............They seem to not want to try and get there money back. I find it all bizzare.
Sorry also another question, a couple of people have posted that if the money stays there for 6 years then it is mine.....................
Is there a 6 year Law???? or are you just highlighting that if a long time passes, i may have a claim on it???:rotfl:0 -
Account adjustment means the account has received a CHAPS transfer or a payment from overseas. Sounds like someone has miskeyed and made a payment in to your account by mistake, so hold on to the money as they're bound to notice soon enough.0

an account adjustment is often used for any amounts being manually credited to your account by abbey (including refunds after a fraud claim or card dispute,). if you haven't contacted abbey about anything like this in the past, contact the fraud team on 0845 8506999, at the very least they should be able to investigate what dept put that money in your account.0
