Hopefully your blood glucose will settle but it does take a while. I hope you get another good nights sleep tonight. Do you have some form of glucose beside your bed in case you go hypo while you sleep?

Never thought of that. One of the possible reasons behind my two hypos this week was the amount of Gliclazide I was taking. I started on 3 pills a day @ 80mg each. Then down to 2 a day on the advice of the consultant on Tuesday and now today just 1/2 a pill twice a day. Right now I am absolutely buzzing a bit like !!!!!! speed. Hopefully over time with diet and exercise I wont need to take the Gliclazide and as the nurse said today it can be unpleasant (no !!!!!! Sherlock). Have just googled the drug-
Sulphonylureas(Gliclazide) unfortunately have a tendency to promote weight gain. This can often be prevented by diet and exercise. They may occasionally cause hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar level). This is most likely to occur during the late morning if you have been physically active or if lunch is late. Symptoms would be faintness, sweating and disorientation. Eating a snack such as a couple of plain biscuits will quickly make you feel better. It is important to be aware of this side effect when driving.
Wish I'd Goggled it on Monday !

I am a fitness instructor and can vouch for the effects of diet and exercise, tho you should initially be supervised by a properly qualified professional (level 4 exercise referral). This will hopefully be heavily subsidised if not free via your GP surgery or council gym. :money:

It's generally recommended to work at low to moderate intensities but in fact once you get fitter and accustomed to your diabetes, higher intensities can really kick the diabetes into touch. :j Client at my last workplace who did Spinning (stationary bike) classes a couple of times a week for a few months and his diabetic nurse wanted to know what he was doing, his results were so impressive! At some point your GP or nurse should explain the principles of low glycaemic index carbohydrates if they haven't already.

    HTH! :o

I do not think this is available in Northern Ireland, is it?

Hopefully you will feel better when your glucose readings settle and you get the correct medication for you. Make sure you have your blood glucose monitor and some form of sugar to raise your blood glucose with you as at all times. Have a good nights sleep and don't get stressed about it as this annoys your readings.

Many thanks Fire Fox. This is pretty much what am I am doing -
    Best Diet For Diabetics

The general consensus among diabetes experts and dietitians is that a healthy diabetic diet should conform to the following guidelines regarding carb intake and calories:
    • Its calorie content should promote a healthy weight
    • Its carbohydrate content may amount to 45-55 percent of total calories
    • The best type of carbohydrates for diabetics are low-GI carbs - that is, those with a lower GI value on the Glycemic Index
    • The diet should include 25-30 grams of daily dietary fiber (the indigestible type of carbohydrate) - both soluble and insoluble
    • Carb sugars need not be avoided, but sugar-intake should be regulated by energy needs
At the moment I am carb detoxing and weaning myself off the cravings of sugar, I have a cupbord full of butter beans and chick peas as I know that these are low on the G.I index. When i've told my health care professionals what I am eating they approved. I am hoping that this will help keep my blood sugar in good order and help me shift a bit of weight at the same time.

How are you feeling today? Did you manage to get a good nights sleep last night?

I've been sleeping brilliantly since it all started (treatment) last week. I feel lousy today, I asume its the Gliclazide, for about 3 hours after each dose I am all over the place and today I've not been able to stray to far from the loo. I would rather be on injections than this.
Received a letter from the hospital today, but I think its come to me in error as it is "bollocking" my surgery for not refering me directly to the diabetic clinic and this lead to a delay in my treatment as I turned up to hospital serverly dehydrated with very high glucose levels, I think the letter was meant for my local surgery.
  • If you want to carry something like sweets to counteract low blood sugars quickly try dextrose tablets (available from Boots etc). Effective but taste yucky! I don't think you'll be tempted to eat them as sweets. Don't forget they give you a quick sugar rush but you'll need something with more longer and slower acting carbs. to maintain the levels otherwise you just start to swing up and down.
If you do end up needing injections don't worry. It's a lot easier now than when I started nearly 50 years ago.
(Note to self - is it really as long ago as that? Scary!)
    Good luck!

Ya Hay ! Finished my other job for ever ! Roll on long summer evenings and dry warm weekends Jim is coming out to play so lock up your wives/girlfriends/sisters/daughters/ Aunties/Grandmothers/nieces etc etc.
Great idea about the dextrose tablets will get some. I've been injecting already, just for last weekend so I completely agree with how easy it is, got to go and take another tablet now so can wipe out the next three hours.
