Hi,
Went with the wife for 2 cappuccino's at BB's in Wellingborough today. Prior to the VAT reduction the cappuccino's cost £3:40 & guess what? Today they still cost £3:40 despite the till receipt showing 51p reduced VAT. So the government didn't push the cost of beverages down they gave BB's an excuse to claw in an extra 8p (aprox) for two cups of coffee, multiply that by all of their outlets & that's a tidy sum. When VAT returns to 17.5% will coffee's go up in price by 2.5% I wonder??

BHS are deducting at till0

Apparently Maplin are pocketing the difference.
They have altered their VAT rate to 15%, but they've just put up the ex VAT price instead.
A friend of mine bought an item today identical to one that he bought last week and the VAT inclusive price was exactly the same today as it was last week (despite the VAT percentage being lowered on the till receipt).0 -
I have been to Debenhams today and was told by a stroppy assistant that they were not reducing their vat rate until next Wednesday. Is this legal?
It is legal as they do not have to pass on the cut.
The major stores who do not pass on the cut, or choose to say they have and still charge the same overall, will be the ones who begin losing customers to other outlets that do pass on the cut. Now if the likes of Debenhams announced redundancies the blame rests entirely with their shareholders taking priority.0 -

- Superdrug (on some items)
- River Island
- Topshop (instore only, no sign in Topman or Burton though?)
- Boots
- Marks & Spencer
- Currys
- New Look
- Argos
- Austin Reed
Shops with no signs or mention of VAT reduction:
- Jack Jones
- Accessorize/Monsoon
- Primark
- H&M
- HMV
- USC
- Ryman's
- Apple Store
Online I've noticed the following with the VAT reduction:
- Amazon
- ASOS
- The Body Shop (online only so far)
- Lovefilm.com
Commend M&S and Boots - who out of all of them, made it very obvious to customers of the reduction...

Apple have already changed all their prices online to reflect the new rate and ther has been info on the website about it for a few days now. I was also in a store today looking at a new laptop and they advised me about the VAT cut.0 -
House of Fraser: a ceiling light on the website prior to today £475 inc VAT. Today, its price is... £474.66! Matching walls lights prior to today £175 inc VAT. Now on at £171.27. So, just using silly prices across all their products to appear to have passed on deductions?
Burton, had a bunch of things priced up over the weekend and none have altered at all on their website. EDIT: on putting items into the checkout, they are reduced beyond that advertised on the main site so fair play:)
They look as If they've just inadvertantly written down the wrong price on the ceiling light, should be £464 but their wall light price looks exactly right to me. Old (price/117.5) x 115 = new price with 15% vat. so they have 175/117.50 = 1.489, x 115 = £171.270 -
Virgin Active aren't passing it on at all.
They're saying there will be no increase next year instead. All good, except they've run a big campaign to get members to switch to "diamond membership" which already means it can never go up.
Membership subscriptions aside, they're also not reducing prices on personal training and purchases of items in the shops / from the desk etc.0 -
I think it depends what they mean.I have been to Debenhams today and was told by a stroppy assistant that they were not reducing their vat rate until next Wednesday. Is this legal?
Firstly they certainly don't have to drop their prices because of the reduction.
So they may well be charging the customer the same total price, but with less VAT they make a little bit extra for themselves.
As to whether they are allowed to charge more VAT than they should I don't know. They certainly wouldn't be allowed to charge less. It's not in their interest to charge more, so I doubt they would do.0 -
I've noted that Asda have reduced their prices on vatable items. I did an online order on Saturday which was delivered yesterday, and all the vatable items had been reduced. My only gripe is that the multibuy offer prices have not been reduced accordingly.
For example a Terry's chocolate orange was £1.92 and is now £1.87. However there is a multibuy offer where you buy two for £3 which has not changed. I bought 4 of these, so I haven't really saved on vat at all having paid the same as before the vat changed.0
