Was looking at a new TV costing £1300 last week, checked again today and it clearly says "This price has been lowered due to the reduction in VAT".

Same price as last week @£1300.

Must be the volatile markets and the price of sugar in their canteen coupled with a light shower in Mongolia that has miraculously forced the price up to the same.

Yet another sector of so called established and beyond reproach blue chip companies in our country that when put on the spot are shown up to be cowboys.

    Let them eat cake.

  • Not that many people have the cash to upgrade their homes at the moment, but I notice from any email I got that Bathstore are offering VAT savings deals:

Not to name and shame just to maybe be of use to someone Amazon and Game have both already lowered their prices.
I was going to purchase from these retailers anyway but had decided to wait until Monday when rate was lowered, I have saved just under £5 on the items I purchased so has helped a little.

  • Greenbee Telecoms (part of John Lewis) have emailed me to say that the rate cut is being passed on.

Tesco have said that they will be passing on the cut in VAT.

It seems like they are but not before they put their prices up first. I was looking at some childrens books which were £3.99 each but since the vat reduction they are now £4.14

Very strange. Thought there was no VAT on books in any case - so there should be no change to the price. (If it were with a CD/DVD as well as a paper book then VAT would be charged.)
  • We are a small independant retailer and stock thousands of items with prices ranging from 20p (strips of wood) up to hundreds of pounds, all our items are priced by hand (no barcode scanning system) I will not be spending my weekend re-pricing these items.

When VAT was increased to 17.5% I also had the same view and did not re-price our items thus taking the loss.

Over the next few weeks as new stock comes in the prices will be adjusted.

The companies we deal with have already warned us that items from America and China will be rising steeply in January (some are going up on the 1st December) so the days of cheap imported goods could be well and truly over.
  • People say that Amazon is passing on the lower VAT rate, yet a few DVDs I was looking at a few months back are still exactly the same price and the "lowervat" code at checkout doesn't work.
