Guys, I gave up (and so did my OH) on the 1st March.. and I tell you what.... it's been alot easier than we noth anticipated. We absolutely dreaded it, were both 20+ per day smokers for 20 years but just had to do it. We did it this way:
1. Decided to do it.
2. Set a date about 1 month ahead of deciding.
3. Talked about it, what we'd do with the extra £80/week etc. talked about our health, our kids, our addiction all the time.
4. Bought patches/lozengers/chewing gum.. got the whole lot ready for D Day.
5. STOPPED SMOKING!!
Neither of us has had so much as a sniff of a cigarrette and we actually can't believe it!! we're so chuffed!! we recon the lozengers are the best! especially the 2mg ones (the 1mg ones are too weak and the 4mg ones too strong) the chewing gum doesn't last very long, a few chews and it's useless, plus it makes you hiccup like a mad person! we only used the patches for 2 weeks and then stopped.
I can honestly say that we're reeping the rewards of giving up and we're sky high with praise for each other... if we can do it.. anyone can!! and I mean that! it's alot easier than you think, but I do believe that you need time to go over it in your head, talk yourself into it... :T :T
Good luck to you all.. it's been over 6 weeks for us and we could both smoke one everyday but the craving isn't that bad that we'd actually have one. I think the first 2-3 days are the worst.

Even after being told this terrible news she will not have it that smoking could possibly have anything to do with it. This makes me really sad. I want her to stop desperately but we just end up arguing about it.
I bough her some of the hand rub gel and gum, but she does not seem to have any will power.
Sorry to hear about that, it must be pretty hard for you and for your Mother.
What you have to remember is that a smoker will only pack in when they are ready, they have to do it for themselves and not for anyone else.
When my Mother passed away a year ago I said (on the actual funeral day) that give me 6 months and Id have quit. So anyways I didnt quite do it in 6 months it was just a bit longer, but I have now been ciggy free since New Years Eve, just before midnight.
I really feel that if your Mother thinks you are nagging she will never quit so personally I think it would be best to try and stop telling her to quit because you might actually make her smoke more and end up never packing in. I know when people used to tell me to pack the fags in I would never have done it, but I did it for myself this time when I quit.0 -

Absolutely spot on! great advice (sorry about your mum Eagle.. that's sad.. did she die from smoking?)... Eagle is so right, you have to be totally ready for it. It sounds very serious but it IS serious, smoking is sooooo adictive that you can't even contemplate waving goodbye to them but you have to be 100% ready.. no less.0 -
Diamonds she died from lung cancer and she had been a smoker for most her life.0

Such a big thread I thought i'd try to get it going again.
Even though I have given up for nearly 5 months, I find talking about the addiction helps me, and enables me to give support to others.
Did everybody start smoking again?, or are some of you still off them?
What have you done with your energy, time, money, extra confidence?
given up for.....
Four months, two weeks, two days, 11 hours, 18 minutes and 47 seconds. 2183 cigarettes not smoked, saving £238.66.
