  • Well done everyone! I think you're all doing brilliantly! Keep it up :D
  • I have been reading these discussions about stopping smoking, and i saw a comment that the cost of patches is as much as smoking! Having browsed through the threads i cannot see a very important piece of information for the smokers who want to stop!

If you go and see your GP or his nurse, Patches (full course) which i will detail are now available on the NHS at the cost of a perscription (£6.80 or so) now!

The planned program is as below:

    8 weeks @ 15Mg
    2 weeks @ 10 Mg
    1 week @ 5 Mg

There are also extra doses available to help the more dependant smoker, in the form of supplements as follows:

    Inhalers
    Micro Tabs
    Gum (3 flavours now available)

Which during those particularly weak moments can help!

The above perscriptions (4 parts) would cost you £6.80 each time (total £27.20) over the whole course!

I think that now the Government/NHS is willing to help us with cost of quitting, that alot more people will and can quit this very bad habit!

    Hope this helps.

    Dave

hi dave, good point and thanks for this. I do think that it is us conning ourselves when we say "i cant afford to give up". I tried this one myself for years! I think more and more people will access the nhs stop smoking support as time goes on and they realise that smoking is becoming increasingly "outcast".

Well done Sez - keep going, but... help! I installed SilkQuit on my computer without realising that it would start running immediately - and I'm not quite at the stage of giving up yet - can I reset or temporarily disable it until that time or is it easier to uninstall and reinstall when I'm ready? With the encouragement of all you lot, I have ordered all the books (Neil Casey, Allan Carr & one other - can't remember title now) - these should arrive next week, and then I'll choose my 'quit date' ;) To be honest, I've never managed to give up before and I have tried several times, but I think my brain is finally getting its act together as I keep getting mental reminders to GIVE UP NOW!

And if any of you lot quit 'quitting' I'll be doomed, so keep going! :D

Dont worry barbara i wont "quit quitting"!! Just going to the chemist to get my patches now infact! I think the books are good but i would strongly advise to use the patches or some kind of nrt if you are serious about giving up. I was too keen on the idea but i thought well its a hard enough thing to do anyway, why now do all i can to ease the blow. And it does seem to have taken the edge off things. Maybe speak to you dr or practice nurse about some nrt? Just my opinion! Will be here ready to give support as soon as your ready to stop sweety!

The timer thing can easily be reset so dont worry about that.

    Take care, sez x

Thanks Sez, I want to try it with the books first, as my doctor operates a 'concentration camp' type of regime with people who ask for help with quitting smoking (I'm sure he gets cashback or at least brownie points for every convert he achieves!) - from the direct experience of friends who have been through his 'treatment' it's best avoided if poss - will go as a last resort however, if it comes to it.
