OS way of using old jeans?

Some of my uses for old jeans have been:
1. Made a pair of kids unusual patchwork jeans curtains - mixed in with some old camouflaged trouser fabric, these curtains are very urban-cool-chic lol!
2. Cut them off at the top of legs, so you have the waistband, tye dyed them, and sewn a ruffly hem on - usually made from a bandana or other funky old clothes fabric - and sell on eeebay as DIY/re-vamped skirt. (goths, emos and punks like these) This works for old kids jeans too (hotchpotch style)
3. Taken a leg and made a carrier bag storage tube with elasticated top and bottom, also tried a bed bolster once, aswell as draught excluder.
4. Used them to line hanging baskets - easier than finding moss!
5.Tye dyed the cut open leg pieces either whole or patchworked to cover stools and those old 50's chairs with the seats that pop out (usually covered in horrible brown or dark green leather)
6. Made a square bag with a drawstring top threaded with string, to store my millions of pairs of boots.
7. Made a dog bed! Same style as a paddling pool with 3 stuffed rings and a flat bottom piece - would be MUCH easier to just make a large flat cushion cover though!!
8. Dog toy - any shape, stuffed with old holey socks/clothes.
9. Beanbags - small ones, filled with dried beans, for putting behind annoying doors which swing open.''A moment's thinking is an hour in words.'' -Thomas Hood0 -
I mended a pair of jeans by using some iron-on webbing on the inside to stick the hole together. I then stitched around it in white, as the jeans were faded anyway. I have to admit, though, that the hole was a little further down. It wasn't noticeable and DS wore them until he grew out of them.
The other thing we do is always to keep one pair of old jeans to cut up so that others can be patched.0 -
Great thread - Mr LW had just turfed out some clothes that are too tatty for the charity shop, including his "second-best wood-worming jeans".
I reckon I'll try for a denim shopping bag out of them - wish me luck, I'm a total novice at sewing.:oIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I'm sure this has been asked before but a search came up with zip for me.
I can't remember how to turn a worn out pair of jeans into a bag. I'm thinking it would be a great present for a friend who loves all things recycled.
Can anyone help please?

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if there are any uses for men's old denim jeans? They're beyond repair (have been repaired a few times in the past - my OH is terrible for ripping them!!!) but I don't want to throw them without knowing they're completely useless.
Thanks in advance xxx0 -
I've hung onto some which I'm planning on turning into wheat bags to keep us warm in the winter. Was going to cut across the legs where they are not too bad then stitch top and bottom and fill with wheat/rice. I also once made a skirt from some of my daughter's which had just become too short: http://www.savvyseams.com/clothing/jeanskirt.php
Having said that probably not a great idea for your OH!0 -
I make gardening gloves with some of OH's old ones, just draw round your hand add a 2.5cm seam allowance and use the ribbing off an old jumper for a cuff (or you can buy this in the haberdashery or ebay.)
I've also made lap quilts with mine, really look good if you use different denims although it takes a while to accumalate enough squares! I use a 4" square as you get loads out of the legs (Could also be made into bedding for animals tough and washable)0 -

Some great ideas here!
I used several old pairs of jeans to make into a rag rug. I cut the legs into long strips, about an inch wide, and tied them together. You can then tie them around in a circle like crocheting. I found instructions on youtube.
I used lots of jeans and so needed donations from others. Family members happily passed their old jeans to me and some kind free-cyclers gave me some too. The rug is about a metre and a half wide and is washable and hard-wearing and looks great.
