  • I make bags from old jeans & also draught excluders from the legs, or you could make pot holders. I once made my DD a quilt made from denim circles, it lookes great when it was finished, weighed a ton & is incredibly hard wearing.

My daughter asked me today if I had any old jeans that didn't fit me. When I asked why she said she had seen something on Tv where you take off the pockets and sew the two together to make purses.

Do you have any kids you could do this for???

Hi Thanks for the replies no dogs or kids but I can sew, will give your ideas a try, patchwork cushions, embellished waistcoat or tote bags perhaps, it just seems such a shame to throw out such great fabric doesnt it? regards

I have recently lost quite a bit of weight (yay for me :j) and have three pairs of denims which I can no longer wear as they are far too far too big. They are too old to give to a charity shop, but are too good to throw away.
Any ideas how I can make use of them (apart from waiting until I put on weight again :rotfl:)

I made a denim patchwork style bag once from an old pair of jeans

  • I was going to suggest a bag too. Cut them off as if you were making very very short shorts. Sew the bottom up and make a strap with the leftovers.

Last year I made a draught excluder from the leg of a pair of jeans. Currently I am planning to make a potato bag from two legs.

I also use denim to patch my jeans pockets. Being a mature boy I always have keys, coins, nuts, bolts, bits left over from fixing the clock, catapults, toffee and midget gems in my pockets. This causes the pockets to wear out long before the jeans do, so I use old jeans to patch the pockets.

I also sew up the bottom of jeans legs, cut them off and put a hem in the other end. Thread string or wool through the hem to make a tie and you have a very useful bag for pegs, tools, hoover attachments or almost anything.

An idea I got from The Tightwad Gazette that I've used with great results is to make pot holders (oven pads) for the kitchen. The denim is thick enough, with added wadding, to make it good. I cut 2 squares out & sewed them (right sides together) along 3 sides. Then stuffed one square of an old duvet for wadding inside & hand sewed the 4th side together. I also made a thin strip & sewed that into the last seam so the holder could be hung up.

You could also make a patchwork blanket (very OS) using some more material if necessary to finish it off. Slightly more ambitious but it'd stop you snacking. Although as you've obviously lost lots of weight & I haven't you've got more willpower than me LOL LOL!
