Just trying to get Sunday lunch going! I need to budget better. I have all the main bills sorted out, it's all the little surprises which annoy me!

    Back is aching though :(

I'm doing OK! Had a bath. Managed to eat a whole fried egg sandwich for brunch (which is good compared with food consumption over the previous three days). I have pottered in the kitchen a bit, put the WM on, put the DW on then went and had a neurofen and a little lie down - but only needed half an hour. I've gone through the post from Thurs, Fri, Sat - two nice jumpers I ordered are even better in the 'flesh' as it were than they looked online, one bill, a couple of statements and my first Christmas card  along with the ubiquitous junk mail. Nice neighbour phoned to see how I was (I stood her up on Friday - our usual get together for gin and gossip). She says her son and DiL have had it for 10 days now :eek:

SarahSh - well done on the no booze. I've been dry now since last Weds evening - haven't been able to face the thought. I suspect I've lost weight but, not knowing what I weighed before, I wouldn't know how much! :rotfl:I might just see'f DiL's got any scales and weigh myself now.

Lil-Me - that's excellent news about LL - but I can understand why you're still nervous. There's no real security is there? And I worry about you leaving cash around - even if it's in a safe. Just what is it about banks that you're so paranoid over?

I was wondering where Dusty was but I do remember greenbee saying she was busy, she might be on her way to my house with her laundry as I did offer :rotfl:

toots, I had to get money savvy a long time ago now because we had a tiny income and huge outgoings, for about 4 years after things improved until the end 2006 I decided to just sit back and ignore it, I came to this site when things were starting to get sticky again and realised I needed to get a grip on it and keep the grip there. I have since paid off another mountain of debts aswell as the ones I had left from my VERY bad time with debts, we don't have a luxurious life but we do ok, we manage to keep both cars on the road (DPs car was bought for him) pay for the caravan and have a few nice uk holidays this year. I can try to help via email but I do most helping others through it (I just seem to have fell into it) in person with people I see regularly so it's easier.

Gryfon, it's budgetting for suprises I find one of the most important. It's those sort of things that make people go all to pot.

soappie, I know what you are saying, it's me being the ever so paranoid person I am, there is nothing wrong with the banks I use (well sort of, mainly Halifax) but I have this 'well if they close tomorrow I am ok' it's not a lot of savings, I don't keep it all in the safe either incase someone takes that :o was broken into over 13 years ago still haunts me. I will get over it eventually, well maybe. I prefer to use cash when buying more because of the debt I got into due to cards, they were just easy money, I just handed over plastic too much, well me and my ex who had access to the accounts and took me for a ride!I got used to it when I didn't have one, using cash. I come from a family of under the bed savers, my Nana went crazy last time my Mam visited as she nearly washed the curtains which were lined so she could put money in them, there was several hundred in each curtain :rotfl: .........................so it runs in the family lol. I only got the safe because Mam complained she was finding money all over the house when she stayed here, suppose it's just normal to me, last week there was about £700 on the bench for a few days until Mam came over and screamed will you put that in the safe, it was there to pay in the bank for the rent. DP gets paid cash aswell so not everything goes into the bank. The car pot money goes sometimes as soon as it's in, depends what needs paying that month, put it on the CC so had £200 in there to pay towards then will put this months £200 so fingers crossed my car doesn't need fixing this month as it's spent lol. I don't usually pay DPs car tax (just his insurance) but he's spent up this month (he has a seperate spending money) but have managed to pay that with the Christmas savings for him to repay. I have a higher interest current account now so find myself leaving money in for longer.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb
  • Have had a VERY productive morning.......HHC resulted in clean shower room, bathroom and downstairs loo!
Then I prepared a beef casserole which is simmering away in the SC - lovely cheap dinner as the beef was 494g pack reduced in Mr T's to £1.34, so I bought it and stuffed it in the freezer. Also put the piece of brisket in the oven, with a good splash of red wine and some stock (good ol' OXO), onion, celery and carrot - when cooked and cold this will be minced up and made into cottage pie filling, nomnomnom. I then made Apple & Pear Low Gi bars for DH and me to take to work and while the oven is on, I plan to try out the Tunis Cake recipe that someone kindly posted on the OS forum.
DH has vacuumed through for me (bless!) and has measured up to see how many tiles we'll need for the kitchen. Haven't felt inclined to go out today - light dusting of snow this morning and then freezing cold rain - but will have to toddle out later just to get some fresh air!

Boddy, so sorry to hear about the baby (((hugs))).

Lil_Me - that sounds more positive news from your landlady - still keeping fingers crossed for you.

Jjef - congratulations to all - enjoy your cuddles with baby Ruby:D .

OK the oven is beeping at me, so I'd better go and rescue the pot roast!

  • Lil_me That's what we've just done... budgeted for every last thing, inc brownies and guides subs, (which is a grand total of £2.)

We haven't been using credit cards for 3 months now, so we've eased ourselves into it gently. But I don't think it's going to be an easy time.

Soappie I'm glad you're better enough to eat now. Do take it steady though. That's been my mistake... doing too much too soon, and falling prey to every bug in my vicinity. Thanks as well, I'm really pleased about the no booze!

lil_me...would be easier if we had some extra money we could put aside to save. But with the mortgage, bills, Mr G having a pay cut when he changed jobs and then illness so no overtime things have been a bit tight. Annoying having to tell the children they can't have things all the time!
