I say tesco but I should say Tesco/Lidl. I do use Lidl and I find them great.

I've worked all my life, always been careful with money but lately a few bad things have happened, and the last straw was loosing my job so I didn't think I was over spending as I always cleared card balances but circumstances change and I was silly I should have been prepared for it better. I've used my saving to pay off my monthly payments and till I got another job but their gone and still no job.
I don't live extravagantly I don't think but I'm willing to make changes as I honestly resent every penny I spend out in supermarkets
  • how come neither you nor your partner works now?
  • The mobile bill is for three phones, 2 for my children both on contact and my pay as you go, which i only use for emergencies
how long does the contracts have to go ? Can you not change them all to pay as you go
 5 account to clear- £14580.47/£1074.90- 7.3% paid off
debt free nov 2012 before that I hope
    sealed jar no 420
  • There are ways to save money on your monthly expenses, others here are far more capable of advising than I!

But looking at your situation overall, you have a few options:

    1. New job - any thoughts on this?
    2. Sending letters to your creditors to explain your situation and making an offer of payment based on your disposable income split pro rata between them.
    3. Asking CCCS to do the same thing for you (a DMP)
    4. Talking to an expert about a) a trust deed or b) bankruptcy (known as sequestration in Scotland)

How do you feel about these?

hi there, I have just recently lost my job.
  • Nice one - you're certainly approaching this in the right way, I think, with your willingness to change.

I don't get how you can spend £1000 a month on food/sundries but I'm curious!! For me, my wife and my baby we spend £200 a month in Tesco and maybe £50 throughout the month on extras. This includes nappies and baby milk etc. All our veg is organic, all our meat is fresh and free-range, and we eat like kings! For £250 a month. OK double that in your case because you have 2 hungry teenagers, but it's still only £500 a month.

Just a guess but do you buy lots of snacks and stuff to keep the kids happy? Or pre-prepared/processed food rather than have to cook from fresh every night? Me and the missus cook up a big pan of something (spaghetti sauce, a curry, a chilli or something), eat half of it then freeze the rest. So that's one lot of cooking for two nights' meals. Do that a few times a week and it becomes 15 nights' cooking for 30 nights' eating.
My Debt Free Diary I owe:
    July 16 £19700 Nov 16 £18002
    Aug 16 £19519 Dec 16 £17708
    Sep 16 £18780 Jan 17 £17082
    Oct 16 £17873
  • One contract has a year to go and the other has around six months, I've called the company, O2, already and been told I have to wait another few months to reduce tarriffs
  • hi there 'lastfiver'
My partner loves to cook and does all the cooking, he always cooks from fresh but we don't buy organic, we use the cheapest of everything. How do you do that? I don't buy any ready made meals. I buy some crisps, and some yoghurts for the children and thats it. And I always try and buy the best offers.
Until I came on here, I didn't realise how much I was over spending.
I always regarded people who bought organic as being wealthier than me and always wanted to be able to justify the cost.
Well done to you, I really wish I'm able to live like you soon.
  • Oh and we do freeze things too.
