No, just sign up now. The free phone number is on the very first post in this thread:beer:Also, they give you a cheaper rate of electricity and gas on top

Is there a 'lock in' period if you sign up to them?
In theory they could give you the £200 advance payment then claw it back by increasing prices?

Also, I see no reference to this £200 on their website, only £125 per fuel. Do you have a link confirming the £200 per fuel for prepayment customers?
  • I just contacted EDF today to confirm if I am on their social tarrif which I have been trying to get on since September as we get (DLA and other benefits).
It appears they put me on the electricity essential tarrif but not the gas one as I have 2 different accounts for each of them.
They said they normally put you on both but in my case they did not,(typical).
So if you have two difference accounts for your energy bills with the same supplier I would make sure they both have been switched over to the social tarrif.
I can see in the coming months when people get their winter bills in and a lot of people getting a shock to see they are still paying the standard rates for their energy.
  • I heard today at work that British Gas will be reintroducing their essentials tariff from April 09. Not much good for people this winter I know, but something to think about for next year.
  • Thanks everyone for thew information you have posted on this. I managed to get the Spreading Warmth tarriff from NPower.

However, the actual cost for gas and electricity is a bit higher than what I was paying before.

BUT, they have been overcharging me by loads for the last 6 months which means they'll have to credit my account AND they will give me £250 in January followed by £62.5 quarterly after that. So really they will be giving £500 for 2009. I won't have to pay a bill for ages!!!!

  • Thank you so much for all the info on here. I just rang Npower and got on the spreading the warmth tariff which I had no idea about. Anyone with a pre-payment meter knows how much they eat up and we got none of the discounts for switching so this is a real bonus :T I'm spreading the word!!!

Just an update on 'NPower Spreading the warmth'

The electric is fine but check the small print on the gas. NPower are charging a £350 per year standing charge on pre pay meters.

Yes Scottish Hydro have been doing this social tarrif since 2007, its called Careline energyplus care.I'm disabled receive HRC & HRM and have been on this tariff since october 2007 and its a fantastic scheme. We get 20% discount on our electricity by way of a refund cheque every quarter. We have a prepayment meter and whatever you put in you get 20% back, no questions asked. The refund just goes back into the meter in our case for the future. All you do is call providing you are a customer and they'll send you the application details or they can do it over the phone but be prepared to have your financial details to hand as your assessed on them.Once you qualify its reviewed every 2 years so I'm up for renewal later this year.

My word I have been with Npower for years and have been on DLA for ages as well and have never heard about this.

I will be on the phone to Npower later today.
