I receive DLA and am with Scottish Power for Gas/Elec. I contacted them by email and got a reply to phone 0800 027 1122 to register for Carefree scheme. However, after phoning them and having to go through their security questions, I was kept on hold only to be told to phone 0141-568-2000 to register. I was kept on hold again, but finally managed to speak to someone who asked me what my disability is and said they will despatch necessary information to me.
    Hope this helps.

  • OK, I called scottish power using the number Kpshah posted above.

Apparently you have to be over 60 as well as disabled or on a low income to qualify.
This seems a bit backward as you could be 60, get DLA and be a milionaire and you would qualify but if you were equaliy disabled but 59, scraping by on IS, in fuel poverty and still not qualify!!!

I talked to a manager who has registered me as having essential electricitcal equiptment.
She also said its worth enquiring again in the new year as they may have something better in the pipeline. She also gave me the phone number
0141 272 6042 and will try to sot out the issues with the free phone number (you may stll have to ask for the caefree team).

Having said that, I capped with scottish power when martin yelled cap in the summer and pay by DD so she said I am better off anyway than I would be on the scheme.
  • I am with EDF and a very nice lady sorted me out with a 15% discount for both my Gas and Electric as I am not only disabled, but a pensioner with Income Guarantee as well. Pretty good discount for the price of a phone call. One of my friends at Craft class told me to ring up and ask,so I did.
  • I received my form from Southern Electric today for their care plus so as requested, I rang them and filled it in over the phone. Got an absolute sweetie of a guy called Martin who couldn't have been more helpful - so if anyone rings and gets him, they're lucky ;) - absolutely no problems with applying, and was told there and then after applying over the phone that I was eligible for the 20% which is a great relief. :)

Do ring Southern Electric to apply, anyone who's applying - you'll save a lot of time and effort - just make sure you have things like the cost of your rent/council tax and benefit amounts etc there in front of you when you call. :)

VERY impressed with Southern Electric's care for their disabled customers, after years of a non-caring British Gas.
  • Hi
I did phone a while back bg and was told to phone back in dec ,
I only put the gas fire on low not the ch can't afford to but my son and I use blankets in the evening when it really gets cold .
my ch was not put on at all last year so can't see it being on this year either
main problem is there is a real draft coming down the stairs which keeps the ch thermostat on constantly

I look after affairs for my Aunt, and she is on Pension Credit, amongst other things.

Phoned up EDF Energy today, and they applied the 15% discount to her bills.

    Very quick, simple, and friendly.

Im with Swalec and a few months back I found out they do special rates. My monthly dd went down from £113 to less than £80.I had a letter last week telling me as Im on this special tariff they wont be increasing my rate until well after the winter months.Well pleased :D

I live at home with family 7 we have Swalec Gas & Electric. Bill is in Mum's name but I am on High DLA & other benifits. Can we get this? or does it have to be in my name???

Who do I ring & what should I ask for??

I too phoned EDF in september of this year to apply for this esential tarrif as I am a carer and get carers allowance.
Just got both my electric and gas bill this week and I am still on the standard tarrif.
I phoned EDF to ask them why I was still on the standard tarrif and not the esential tarrif.
The person I spoke to said she did not know and they did not even have any details about my application in september.
So I gave her my NI number and she said they would send me a letter confirming I was on the esential tarrif.
I wonder how many people think they are on the esential tarrif until they get their energy bills and find out they are still on the standard tarrif.
So I would call them and ask them to confirm which tarrif your on.
