I normally go over about 0925, and come back about 1905 or there abouts (can't remember exactly what time it is without looking)

    Does sound good though x

Ok, living near Portsmouth it's a 2-3 hour drive to Dover, so happy to leave home about 10 ish, get the 2ish boat over, then come back on the last one of the night, about 23:30. Gives us 6-7 hours to stock up in Belgium, do an Auchan type shop, have some food and a bit of sight seeing, went up to 2 Caps last time, could see England from there. Time before we stayed in La Panne, just in Belgium and strolled along the beach/prom lovely atmosphere but it was Summer.

Used to like stopping over but the cheap hotels aren't so cheap anymore, F1s ok but no loo in the room, then Etap or B&B but they are £30+ now.

    Sounds good. :)

I'm lucky I'm less than an hour from Dover. I normally pop to Cite Europe and than onto some exploring wherever I fancy. I went over there beginning to September and went to a V2 museum. Not La Coupule.

La Panne did look good. I went through there back in April, and it's somewhere I may go back too.

I, too can start from Pompey! How would you drive there A3 to M25 ?? Trouble is would the expense to even get to Dover (and return) outweigh any savings you would get from the trip? I don't think petrol is cheaper out there anymore - I remember driving over with a virtually empty tank and filling up in the hypermarket because it was so cheap.

A3 M25 M26 then M20 with the Hindhead tunnel only 2 roundabouts all the way. If you are a smoker then it's still worth it £17 packs of baccy for a fiver and cigs around half the price in Belgium which is 45 mins down the motorway. Petrol dearer diesel was €1.31 so a bit cheaper.

Don't smoke (nobody I know smokes any more!); have plenty of wine ! Therefore the journey would only be for 'fun' and for me it is an expensive bit of fun !

For those that it will help it seems a good bargain.

I don't smoke either, so use it as a day out, and to stock up on French goodies! I love carrefour.

Its a tiny bit cheaper I think but not by much. I checked carrefour's website the other day as I've booked a day trip. The price was from October and it worked out just under £1.26 a litre. I was paying £1.26.7 until Wednesday here but now the cheapest in South London seems to be £1.28.9

If anyone does go you can sign up for the carrefour and auchan loyalty schemes as they sometimes have extra discount etc. I don't know if they give you the card in store but I've got key ring ones so they must post them to the uk if they don't.
