I can see both sides here (if there are indeed only 2 sides here, it's all a bit confusing). I think if they change your bank details, it can take a while....no matter if they'd given you a better timescale, those charges still would have swallowed up the amount which still would have gone to the old account. That isn't actually their fault, although if the timescale was wrong, then that's a training issue (which had nil impact, as the problem is that the money would have gone to the same account, which you can't use the money in as you have gone overdrawn). Now due to the issues with the old account, this is impacting your family's life. As a longer term solution I think learning to manage money better might be a good idea (I see that as a positive thing to do...although being on this website has been an excellent way for me to learn better how to manage my money, so I'd guess you're already on your way). Most of us do realise the bank charges are unfair, at least in amount, but unfortunately at the moment, it's not going to resolve itself. Short term, are there any odd jobs you can do (when I refer to you in this, I mean your family collectively)? Anyone who can lend you a temporary (interest free) loan? Do you have any money lent out to any friends you can get back? Can you pop round to other family for a couple of dinners this week (this could reduce food bill, and gas/elec)? I don't know what else to suggest.

On a more positive note, you can get out of these kind of situations in time. A couple of years ago I had been ill (severely), and had no job, didn't get round to claiming benefits, then someone close to me almost died (was touch and go and devestating) and it made me start to learn to look after myself better, manage my money better, etc. I got better myself in time, and after I started learning about money-management, I became a dab hand at it, and now my friends ask me for advice. I feel a lot happier now, as I feel in control of my finances.

I hope your situation improves greatly for you.
  • Sorry but a crisis loan is the only option for the immediate short term. Yes it sounds like IS have cocked up, after all they paid you a cheque last week and then instead of inputting new account details have left the other one in.

You can write a letter asking for compensation for stress/inconvience but we are not talking big sums here prob in the region of £30.

As for the bank charges if you have incurred charges on the NEW account because of this sole error then maybe you can get those back but not the old account charges.

If they havent called you back today then start the crisis loan route first thing tomorrow because I cann guarantee you there is no way IS will be able to replace the payment as it is deemed as paid albeit into an overdrawn account.

May I also suggest that a Post office card account may be a more suitable account for you as you can not go overdrawn. Yes you can not use it for standing orders etc but when you are living week to week on benefits it may be better to pay bills in cash at bank etc.

As for the posters who are flaming well they need to get a grip! Yes the OP is not innocent and has made mistakes with her finances in the past but who bloody hasnt.

She didnt say she wouldnt pay a Crisis loan and wanted free money she sat she couldn't afford to repay one. Thats a different matter. Even if she had no intention of repaying a Crisis loan eventually it would be recovered one way or another

My tax credits thankfully goes in tomorrow so that's £50 which will buy us food and electric, gas we'll have to do without.

What about child benefit? TBH for just 2 adults and 1 small child £20 should feed you for best part of a week. £10 each for electric and gas and you have £10 left for nappies or whatever. Should do it fairly comfortably.

How is it not the benefits fault? I gave them new bank details, they paid it into the wrong account, please do explain how it isn't their fault.

But they told you that you hadn't given them enough time and that the payment would probably be going into the other account. It's really not their fault.

Glad that you are getting £50 tomorrow to sort yourself out. I think that perhaps this needs to be a wake up call. If you have no money to work as a buffer, then you need to be ultra organised with your spending. The OS boards are great as you can get tips over there to make healthy family meals practically from dust (iykwim lol).

What a lovely thorough reply, thank you very much. I got told it takes 4 days to change the bank details over hence why the first payment after the change was made by giro because they hadn't had the 4 days to change it :( We are beginning to manage our money better with a budgeting list etc but sometimes mistakes happen which can lead to going overdrawn but I now have complete control over the new account as its in both of our names which helps. Jobwise my husband won't leave my son alone with me unless it is urgent due to my illness otherwise he would work full time (and I guess we wouldn't be in this mess now but thanks for the suggestion.) I've managed to get my shopping down to £30 for the week so will have £20 for gas and electric so tax credits tomorrow will cover that thankfully.

I am hopeful for the future as are my psychiatrist and consultant and eventually I cannot wait to lead a somewhat normal life with a career to be proud of.

    Me again!

On my first post to you, which read :

Your wrong (again). See my first post on this thread.

The truth usually hurts. When you have a problem the first step is take a long good look at yourself.

There is a load of help on theses board, from reclaiming your bank charges, through to how to grow your own veg.

But you have to do this yourself. This advice centres around yourself going and doing something. It won't come to you.

Good luck Boppy, remember to help yourself a little now and again.

    Bozo

You are boring me now so I would rather not read nasty little digs or comments from you so I would refrain from replying again.

Thank you very much Mrs To Be, you have hit the nail right on the head regarding it all. I will be phoning IS again tomorrow morning just to clarify what will happen next week as there is no way we can continue like this every week, we may as well not be in IS if they keep paying the bank it!

We looked at getting a Post Office account but there's talks they won't always be around so we went for a ReadyCash account which is our new one and we have decided to have no direct debits and to deal in cash only so hopefully we will never have a bank charge again.

I am the first to admit my finances were horrendous but slowly they are getting better and in all honesty anyone on benefits has to learn to strictly budget or they do without things they need.

The crisis loan comment I made because if IS hadn't messed up I wouldn't need to get one so therefore I didn't see why I should pay for their mistake, of course I would pay it back, it would come out of my IS :rotfl:

Anyway thank you very much for your reply and for understanding where I am coming from with this.

Just to clarify you gave them more than enough notice..and dont let them say you didnt...it only actually takes a couple of days. It takes 4 days to reach the new account....they should have sent you a cheque if not enough time

No they told me that on the 29th for the payment on the 3rd November which they paid by giro because I mentioned if they paid it into the old account it might get swallowed by bank charges. When I spoke to them on the 3rd they told me the 10ths payment (today's) would be in the new account.

I am ultra organised with my spending now but I need to be able to budget with the money we get, I can't budget with nothing if IS mess up all the time.

Thank you for your reply though, I will be over on the Old Style Boards soon as at present we eat healthily for cheap but it's the same old same old so could do with some new cheap recipes.

Yes this is what they did with the first payment after been told the new account details and then for some reason they have paid this weeks into the old account rather than the new account even though they told me last Monday it would be in the new account.

They have royally messed it up.
