I am very sorry for your loss. But what you just posted really shocked me. Think about what you wrote.

    I hope you find peace.

I too was shocked by the post you refer to but in the absence of any knowledge of this lady's individual personal circumstances I think it fair not to pass any judgement. Additionally, I'm sure this form of dark humour is just someone's way of dealing with a massive loss and your school ma'am-y comment 'Think about what you wrote' will not help her in any way.

I already had a look but I read that it's not opened instantly even if applied for via the web.

It (the Coventry Poppy account) can be if you're an existing customer. I opened one yesterday and transferred into it from First Direct (via my Coventry First account) within a few hours.

Out of interest, how much money are people talking about here - is it £1000 or £100000?

I'm not really surprised with the security around banking these days that you cannot open a new bank account at 9pm, going through all the necessary checks, and deposit and clear £100K from another bank.

Well I opened 3 accounts with Halifax last night, a:
Halifax Web Saver Reward fixed at 5% with 4 withdrawals a year, which I have already transferred £50 too.

Then I thought why not get a Halifax Guaranteed Saver Reward fixed at 6% for the year.. which required me to open a current account too, which I have to pay £1k in to a month.

There is no reason I should not get them as there was something about any account openend on or after 7th November may have a different rate, but mine were done on 6th.

And I guess you could just cycle 1k from your existing current account to satisfy the requirement.

I have opened a Halifax Guarenteed Saver Reward too but on the account screen it does not say the reward bit and interest rate is showing as 4.5% instead of 6%. Has anyone queried this with the Halifax? I have an acceptable current account and meet other criteria.

    Any thoughts?

When I opened mine I remember seeing a note somewhere during the opening process saying that it would show on the Accounts page as a Guaranteed Saver but the correct rate would be applied, cannot remember the exact wording sorry

I too am totally exhausted and a bit worried about the whole thing as I was hoping to retire in April. The interest rates by then will be dilch!!! But surely the banks will have to offer some reasonable rates because they need savers money, or am I missing something.
