Latest prices from Germany, as promised !

    Electricity 14.8p kWh + £5.6 month S/C

    Gas 5.656p kWh + £9 S/C
Assuming these prices include VAT. These prices seem fairly representative, I used them because they were based on a flat rate tariff and were the easiest to use for comparison.

Using the prices I am paying Eon and assuming 4000 for Elec and 20000 for gas, this works out at:

    UK: Elec £514
    Ger: Elec £660

    UK: Gas £728
    Ger: Gas £1200

If you wish to examine these prices, or find a better deal, could I refer you to these two German comparison sites.

My German friend says that there is as much disquiet in Germany as in UK about the confusing tariffs, and "tricks" (his word !) used by the energy suppliers.
There are flat rates with or without Standing Charges. You can pay for a whole year's supply in advance. You can get cash back bonuses. etc, etc
  • Moonrakerz, as I have stated, it's entirely possible to find those %tage discrepancies between 2 people in the UK (my neighbour, as I have already stated, pays 50% more than me for his domestic fuel). It's not exactly a scientific study, it's anecdotal and, like I have demonstrated, it can be beaten in the UK. In fact, my example is far more reliable as BOTH the people are experiencing the same cost of living and wage levels. In short, your argument is not only deeply flawed but rather pointless...

Go back to the title of this thread. "Gas prices in the UK higher than in Europe". As a generalisation (which it is), that statement is incorrect - full stop.

I agree that you (I) could produce figures that might appear to show that gas is cheaper in Aberdeen than Penzance or that electricity is cheaper in 1 Acacia Avenue that in 7 Acacia Avenue. This doesn't make the original statement correct.

If you look at the comparison sites links I posted, there are dozens of suppliers listed there - I went through a number of them and didn't find one that was anywhere near to the prices we pay in UK - they were all higher.

    Latvia 0.034
    Estonia 0.035
    Bulgaria 0.041
    Czech Rep. 0.045
    Romania 0.046
    United Kingdom 0.048
    Luxembourg 0.049

All these figures are before the massive 30%+ hikes by UK gas companies.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/3379808/UK-gas-and-electricity-bills-increasing-at-twice-the-rate-of-European-neighbours.html

The most up-to-date figures from Ofgem, the regulator, do suggest that British consumers enjoy slightly lower gas prices than the rest of Europe, while our electricity bills are in line with out neighbours.
However, these figures are from the end of last year, since when annual gas bills have increased in the UK by £277 on average to hit £834 – an increase of nearly 50 per cent.

So there you have it OFGEM the energy 'watchdog' producing year old figures to try and mislead the public.

    Pass the sick bag.

Still, they only had a year to produce the figures eh, that's pretty fast moving for a watchdog isn't it?

Rome was not built in a day as they say, mind you, if OFGEM was building it they would still be putting the finishing touches on the Colosseum.

Yet another reason these sort of comparisons are pointless is they pay no attention to the level of remuneration (i.e the ability to pay) in their respective countries. For instance, if we were to assume you and your German friend worked in the same industry at the same seniority etc, ask him if he would prefer to have our gas and electric prices and your wage. I'm suspecting he would (ever so politely) decline. ;)

  • Reactor...why dont you do a bit of your own research before saying things that simply arent true. Like us in the UK, the rest of Europe also have price comparison websites... if you dont understand French or anyother european language, you can use google to translate this for you. I have used the national average of 20500Kwh per annum to do a comparsion for an EDF customer in the UK compared with france.

The UK customer on EDF standard tarriff would pay £776.11
where as an EDF customer in France would pay £1019.78

Like i said, i got these prices by quoting 20500Kwh on the french price comparison website https://www.selectra.info compared with prices on https://www.uswitch.com

I await to hear your response to this.
