Gas prices in the UK higher than in Europe.

And this despite the fact that we produce most of our own gas whilst many Eurpean customers have no gas of their own.
So our gas is being sold of cheaply to the Europeans whilst our gas companies overcharge us.
What a state of affairs.
When are the authorites going to do something to stop our gas companies ripping us off?
So much for the so called watchdog OFGEM, more like a sleeping dog than a watchdog.
That's because OFGEM allow their friends in the cartel of energy companies to rip off the British customers. OFGEM are totally useless and were correctly described as "pathetic & toothless" on a radio programme a few weeks ago.0 -
is it not about time that all these watch dogswere made up of your average man on the street , rather than the toothless idiots who appear to be running things now0

reactor,
why are you posting under that name? Have you been banned using your other name?
What has the above post got to do with European prices?
I am not sure what you are on about, I'm not banned, I've just joined.
Look if you have criminals like Npower stealing from their customers by cheating on their tarriffs, what the hell do you think is going on in the less transparent gas market where gas prices are inexplicable high?
OFGEM has given them the green light to rob their customers and that is exactly
what they are doing.
What is your vested interest in the energy companies by the way, how are you making money out of it? You certaintly are not a normal person.
Utility company worker perhaps, paid to put out propaganda to justify their high prices?
That's what it seems like. Do you think you will succeed in defending the indefensible?
I don't0 -

I appreciate you have just joined, and have not been banned, which is about the only accurate information you have posted.
However you previously ranted under the name of 'iamesbo'.
I don't rant, do you find it surprising that more than one person should be concerned about overcharging and criminality by the energy companies, despite all the evidence?
How do you persoanlly benefit from utility companies over charging, I don't recall you
addressing that point.0 -
I'd like to see real figures for what Europeans are actually paying for Gas before agreeing with the thread heading. Do they pay less than the cheapest tariff in the UK for the cheapest region or what?
Found this though (dated today) which looks encouraging.

Nov - EnBW***, Germany's third-largest utility says it will reduce gas prices by an average 4 percent as of Jan. 1, 2009 and possibly again early next year, to reflect falling crude prices. This makes it the first big gas company to respond to oil's decline under cross-indexation clauses in its gas contracts, which normally follow oil prices with a six-monthly time lag.0 -
I am bored to death with this subject.
All pointless guesswork and speculation. Why doesn't someone post some real figures? Because they don't have any.
Come back when you do.
I have just asked a friend in Germany for his latest energy prices - last time he was 34% more than me - both on eon !0 -
Here we go again :rolleyes:. My next door neighbour (last time I checked that's in the UK) is paying 50% more than me for gas at the moment.Call me Carmine....
HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??0 -
It seems rather obvious that mech, moonraker and cardew have a vested interest in high energy prices would they care to declare how they personally benefit from high eneergy prices?0

The last figures for gas prices I have seen are in this document which is for June 2008.
http://www.energy.eu/#domestic
In June 2008 for a consumption of 2000 cubic metres(at 22,000kWh is approx UK average) the price of a kWh in Euros was:
Figures in brackets are pence at today’s exchange rate of £1= 1.24 Euro.
France = 0.063 (5.1p)
Spain = 0.065 (5.2p)
Ireland = 0.070 (5.6p)
Germany = 0.082 (6.6p)
Italy = 0.086 (6.9p)
Netherlands = 0.124 (10.0p)
Sweden = 0.152 = (12.3p)
Denmark = 0.152 = (12.3p)
UK = 0.048 (3.9p)
There has been large gas price increase in UK since June; in the order of 30% to 35% for some companies.
There have also been increases in Europe, although I can’t find figures – not that I have looked hard!
Given that a 30% increase on the average UK price(3.9p) brings us up to the pre-increase price for France(5.1p) I am reasonably confident that UK prices are still lower than European prices – but that is conjecture on my part.
However the OP still maintains the he knows European prices are lower, and his proof is to quote a number of articles that actually say UK prices are lower.0
