I have heard the appropriate energy official speaking on this subject on the News (can't be bothered to look this up and post links, but I can confirm that this is genuine. The UK does not have sufficient storage, so sells gas to Europe in summer when it's cheaper. It's stored in Europe (France, I think), and sold back to us at a higher price in winter when we need it.

And no-one is creating a fuss about why are we not building the required storage.

    Jen

Problem is if they built gas storage faciites they would have less of an excuse to
charge extortionate prices and make huge profits, so they don't want to do it.
I would not be surprised if they blow up what storage facilites they have up to be honest, that could get their profits up another 20%.

So I would say they could make 10% profit and still reduce their bills by half easilly.

    .

Just to illustrate the drivel you are talking:
The energy companies profit margin is 5 - 7 %. But now you are saying that these "rip-off cartels" should increase their profit margins to 10 % !!

    Goodbye.

The piece on the radio news today said that energy prices in the last year in Britain have risen 30%, wherease increases in Germany & France have only risen 14%. It also observed that most of our energy providers are not owned by British companies, the rather obvious conclusion being that British consumers were subsidising European.

Here are a couple of links that back this up

The links you give are almost word for word the same as carried in much of the media - probably a feed from Reuters.

The content of that report is not being disputed as far as I am aware. All it states is that UK gas prices have risen faster than European prices - NOT that UK prices are higher than European prices - indeed it states the UK prices are lower.

However where does it state that "the rather obvious conclusion being that British consumers were subsidising European."?

Also where does it state that UK prices are higher than Europe? - which is the title of this thread.

It actually goes on to say we have the cheapest gas in Europe, but qualifies that statement by adding that those latest figures are based on statistics before the latest round of price rises. - NOTE: rises either in UK or in Europe.
  • Sooo..cheapest gas in Europe BEFORE the latest price rises. The average rise here was 30% but only 14% in Germany and France? Soooo...do we STILL have the cheapest gas prices in Europe, i.e. NOW, not before the latest increase? Surely that's the real question...

PS I thought the average price rise this year was 50%? Don't forget there have been TWO rises in 2008...

I am bored to death with this subject.

All pointless guesswork and speculation. Why doesn't someone post some real figures? Because they don't have any.

    Come back when you do.

why are you posting under that name? Have you been banned using your other name?

What has the above post got to do with European prices?
