I know as they get older they will cost more & more - not just financially but time wise too. As a child I played a couple of sports at county level & my Dad would spend lots of weekends shipping me around the region to training or tournaments, plus all the equipment etc.

IMO it is all worth while as it builds their confidence, helps them make friends etc.

You are not kidding re time commitment for parents!

I seem to spend most evenings on the train ferrying child/children to town (DD1 can get herself there and back, but DS, though younger finishes later-and on alternate days to her, so is a bit young to travel back alone). Actually though it is pretty nice to spend time on the train with 1 child- you get a lot of chatting in and both they and you are "captive" to talk and listen- same in the car .

My parents did the same for me as I did a lot of music and I loved it.

    Less than £10
    1yo - £2, Toddler Group
    4yo - does nothing yet
    6yo - £2.25, Beavers
    14yo - £0, Army Cadets is free.
There are things on top though, so camping/days out with their groups would cost extra, but these are not often and not expensive.

6yo will be starting Martial Arts in the new year as its something she wants to do, but waiting for baby to get here first - that will be another £5 a week. When the 4yo hits 5, she will probably start Rainbows another £2 odd a week.

So at the moment, its not a lot! Although I bet I spend more in petrol carting them to groups!!

I do think its worth it though for the benefits to their confidence and enjoyment. As long as we still have time for family stuff though, I have always tried to keep weekends free and mostly this is the case except for my sons football matches which sometimes happen on a sunday morning.

    DD (7) has:
Tap dancing - £4 (uniform and shoes cost about £45  but she had the uniform for her birthday - half from us and half from my sister)

    Swimming lessons - £4

    Gymnastics - £4

Brownies - don't pay yet but it's about £1-2 a week I think (uniform about £40 but will last a couple of years as it's big! :D )
    Football - FREE :j
Games - indoor/outdoor depending on weather FREE :j

    All term time only though!

I didn't intend for her to be doing all these things but she came to the top of two very long waiting lists after I'd arranged alternative things for her! I thought she may get bored of one or two but she is still very keen on doing them all.

14yr DS Rugby free after school.
    Football free after school.
8yr DD Brownies £1.50, uniform free loan for £2 deposit.
    Tag Rugby free after school.
    Swimming £3.50.
    Hockey free after school.
    Netball free after school.
    5yr DS Swimming £1.50.
    Football free church run.

Very lucky as we have excellent schools here and teachers and parents give up a lot of their time, will always pay for swimming though as an essential, my son was only 5 in July he's already level 7. Better than me. Wouldn't be very happy to spend too much though, if it wasn't all free they would be getting a lot more walks and bike rides!
Too many children, too little time!!!
