larmy16 wrote:Just a comment on the Christmas post though. If my book (the one complained about) was sent first class on 16 Dec and took ages to arrive, how peculiar then that on Wednesday 22nd I sent one second class which got there on Saturday 24th. I read that there's no difference between 1st and 2nd class post at this time of year.0 -

I was told that too by a postman recently. I think basically it is a free for all.
I am beginning to think though, than in respect of Amazon, it is better to send first class (increase book price to allow for it), then you can have no complaints, at least about service you chose!!!
Because the buyer pays £2.75 for delivery, I think they may feel somewhat aggrieved to receive something by second class costing 94 pence for example. They don't realise that the seller has to include this delivery amount to make some kind of profit. Anyway, first class for me from now on.Grocery Challenge £139/240 until 31/01

Larmy - if you do decide to go first class on all your amazon stuff, I'd shout about it in your descriptions, I always put in the listing that I'm posting 1st class, same day dispatch (unless it is a really heavy book that I'll be sending by standard parcels and then I miss out the '1st class' bit and hope that the same day dispatch swings it my way) this will give you the edge on the other books listed.0

Hope you all had a lovely Christmas.
Had a bit of a weird one on Christmas eve, woman emailed me to say book she purchased was rather out of date(it was a lonely planet book on Victoria),anyway yes the book was not as pictured but an earlier edition, and I did write in CAPITALS in the 1st line of my description that it was the 1996 edition hense the price which was about £5 cheaper than the up to date version,I have emailed her to state this and given a link to the purchase, just hope I dont get a neg over this,as I am not sure if you are even meant to do this,I am sure we(mse) have discussed this and said providing you are up front with the description its ok.
Havent heard back from her yet but must keep fingers crossed.
Have you done this before?or do you think this should not be done?
All help gratefully received.0 -

Angela yes I have done this and one recently but (as yet) no complaint! It was a very early 1961 book Pelican about the pyramids of Egypt. It was v. yellow and like you was upfront about its age, condition etc. I really think it is up to the buyer to make their decision about whether to buy - after all we are not forcing them to buy!! Mind you I am slightly angry at the moment  with buyers and their unrealistic expectations. Good luck- you have done nothing wrong though.

Hi everyone, hope you all had good crimbos. Only just back on here, 2 year old daughter developed chickenpox on christmas day so have been a bit preoccupied!!
Can anyone tell me when the post offices open again - tell me it wasn't today?! Can't get hold of a doctor or an open chemist within about 10 miles!! Ironic if the flipping PO was open.
I sold a book on christmas eve, 2 cds on christmas day and an audiobook on boxing day. No peace for the wicked hey?!
Not complaining though.

i think its tomorrow purplepatch. at least i hope it is
i've got a couple of books to send out. but hope you get a doctor if you need one.
Angela, i've just listed a similar book but it was newer than any i could find. i had to change the description, i couldn't list the rrp cause there wasn't one, and the publisher was different. so was the number of pages. and the isbn couldn't be found on amazon. i nearly used up all the digits allowed0 -

i'm inclined to agree apprentice tycoon. if there's a decent profit to be made, i send first class. i know i shouldn't make any concessions for high price and low price cause the buyers are still forking out money, but i'd be on a loser if too many went 1st class. but i do stress when its 1st class and keep quiet when it ain't
touch wood, the few ratings i've had have all mentioned the quick delivery, even those that go 2nd class0 -
Bought a good book on Saturday - £4 from charity shop. It's a hardback about the Elgin family history, is absolutely immaculate. And it's signed by the current Earl of Elgin, dated April '03.
It's a deleted title published in the 80s and there are only a couple of acceptable ones listed, ex library books I think, both at £25ish.
I'm utterly clueless with this one as I have a feeling that the fact it's signed could make quite a hefty difference to the value.
Does anyone know any way of getting some expert advice? I'm tempted to list at some silly price, but even with that, I'm not sure quite how silly to go!! Even looking at alibris and abebooks hasn't come up with any other signed versions - in fact there only seem to be about half a dozen for sale world wide.
In a bit of a quandary really!0 -
Take it to a local auction or collectibles shop or a book specialist if there is one nearby, an ask them how they would put in auction for or put it on sale for? You might get away by ringing them since it is in immaculate condition.
ps. No wonder I wasn't getting any updates on this thread in usercp, its a new thread! Great 11 more pages to read again!0
