Not sure where you get your components from, but readily available for:

    decent graphics card £100 £50
    sound card £60 £20
    speakers £70 £20
    monitor £170 £50
    dvd-rw/cd-rw £70 £25

I guess you must be a PCWorld shopper!  :P

    Where can i get a dvd-rw/cd-rw for £25?

you can get them from computer fairs but they are the seriously crap ones.....personally i would spend a tenner more and get an nec one from ebuyer...or one of the other pc component etailers...dabs, novatech, stak trading, scan, komplett

i used to laugh at pcworld...stamping down prices my a**e!

but they are getting better...their component section is reasonably competitve.....ie. in store they had a samsung 16x dvd writer for 40.00....ok ebuyer etc are a few pence cheaper with p and p albeit for a better make, nec, but if it goes wrong its easier to take it back to a shop

Not only that - PC World don't argue as much as online retailers, and you don't have to pay return postage either.
I had an £80 Belkin Router fail on me and PCW replaced it instantly, no questions asked. I had a £20 memory chip which caused me problems and Aria took 7 weeks to tell me they thought it was OK, then charged me postage to return it!
These days I only buy from the online discount retailers if the price difference is well worth it.

The price seems to have gone UP, to £201.57 for this similar system.
The price changes all the time. Now the same PC is down to £192.70, without using any discount voucher.

Could a guru please advise on what RAM one should buy to upgrade ? The Dell website seems to suggest 184 Pin Non ECC DIMM 333 Mhz.

How does this square with the 400 Mhz FSB of the processor or has the one got nothing to do with the other ?

Also, I seem to remember from the dim and distant past that if there was a 256 Mb RAM chip in any additional chip had to be the same 256Mb size (i.e. matched pairs). Does this still apply ??

Are addiutional RAM chips easy to fit into this sort of model ?

    Thanks !

The 2400 does not need matched RAM, as it only uses single-channel.

Personally, if in any doubt, I would buy from crucial.com using their memory chooser. They also have fast delivery and guarantee the stuff works.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?
