I had an eye test yesterday at Tesco and the total cost including my prescription glasses was only £10.00. There seems to be an offer on at the moment where the eye test is free. You pick your own frames (mine were from the value range) and the cost includes the lenses. There are extra charges for tinting etc but for a pair of basic glasses I thought this was very cheap. I hope this information helps someone.
Yes, Tesco are now offering a free sight test on a permanent basis.
  • Where is the best price for reglazing glasses that need thin (1.67 or 1.7) lenses? I am quite shortsighted and need thin lenses. Cheers!

Ciliaryblue have glazed my glasses and I am about to send another pair. There thin lenses are cheaper than Tesco and Glases Direct. https://www.ciliaryblue.com

If you're like me and need Labrador strength glasses (i.e. it's them or a dog big enough not to fall over) :rotfl: I discovered purely by chance that as my prescription is now -10 in total for one eye ( -9 cyl -1.75 sph) I am entitled to a free NHS eye test, and a £10 government voucher towards the cost of glasses. Now it was only Boots that told me this, all the other opticians have been robbing me blind...

As for glasses the only place I've found so far for high strength lenses is Opticals4less normally good - take around a fortnight from China, unless you have friends who live in India - then you can get an excellent deal - I've done this before, providing you have your existing frame size details and prescription the Indian opticians seem to do a better job than here.

Thanks for your input, unfortunately my eyes seem to cost me a premium, they come out a minimum of £48.

Every single optician seems to sell only small glasses at the moment - ie quite narrow frames from top to bottom. I hate these, especially the dark coloured ones as I had a pair as a teenager hundreds of years ago and they made me look absolutely vile. Does anyone know of anywhere that does larger glasses - which I see better with too? I don't mean gigantic ones, even I know these are hopelessly out of date! Alternatively, I wonder if I could get my ancient John Lennon specs reglazed with varifocals - although I think you need a certain lens size for varifocals, is that right? Any advice appreciated.
  • Does anyone know where I can get my glasses reglazed but also use the eye voucher for £55 that I received from work?

I asked in D & A and they want £135! Specsavers said "Yes, we reglaze and prices start at only £39 for single lens". So I said brilliant, I have this voucher from my work. I was then told "Sorry, we can't accept those vouchers for just a reglaze".

Why on earth not!!!! I just want to get some glasses, obviously as cheap as possible, that's why I want to use my old frames and this voucher from work!

I currently have varifocals but want just bifocals but it seems like I'm asking for the earth.

Does anyone know how or where I could use my voucher please :A

    Many thanks

Yes Specsavers are a bit of a con. Their so called "two for one deals" dont apply either if you're entitled to NHS vouchers. They don't say that in the Ads...

As for re-glazing, I would have a look around the street markets, you sometimes come across stall's offering spectacles now.

Optical4less.com have special services section, I don't know if they would do a re-glaze but worth asking.

    Have you tried Tescos?

Try Optical4less.com or one of the other online ones, they have the frame measurements on them. I've seen quite large ones on these sites.

Unfortunately they don't give the height measurement which is the important one for bi-focals or varifocals.
