Glasses Buying Cost Cutting Plan Article Discussion Area

Hi
I've just bought a pair of rimless glasses from EyeExperts.co.uk. Delivery was fantastic - ordered Tuesday am and arrived Friday am. I really like the glasses from the front, but although I paid extra to have thinner lenses (1.74), they are quite thick at the sides (just over 3mm at the thickest).
My prescription is:
Right - sphere -3.50, Cyl -1.00, Axis 165
Left - sphere -3.75, Cyl -0.75, Axis 165
Should they be this thick? I've never had rimless before, so am not sure if this is normal??Any advice would be greatfully received.
Hi ELHicks,
Have you contacted EyeExperts to see what they have say on the matter of the thick lens edges? Maybe the manufacture put standard lenses in by mistake.
I was going to order some glasses from EyeExperts myself as Quidco give 18% with them and would like to hear if they sorted your lenses out.
Maybe if any other MSE-ers have any knowledge regarding this company or "thin" lenses in rimless spectacles I'd like to read your thoughts, too.
TIA,

After reading about cheap glasses, I've bought some new ones from Specs By Post, had a chat with them first as my precription was slightly higher than their range quoted, but it wasn't a problem. they also post abroad. It was the first time I bought things like this and some of my friends thought I was mad, but wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. Thank you MSE0

With regards to the rimless and the 'thick' lenses, the prescription shown is for someone who is short sighted, the thinnest point of the lens is the centre and it gradually increases to the edge. This means that they can only make them as thin as the centre allows, British standards state this must be 2mm for optimum safety but international regulations are less than this and vary.
With rimless specs the lenses are drilled at the bridge and temple, if the centre of the lens is made too thin it wil crack between these two points either during manufacture or with wear shortly after. Using thinner materials can reduce the appearence of the thickness as they are denser so by nature thinner, however with rimless there are still limits to balancing off a cosmetically pleasing pair with a pair that will endure the every day wear and tear needed.
I personally would never have sold a pair of 1.74 lenses to someone with a reasonably minor prescription as its a little overkill and the difference this makes compared to the 1.6 is minimal, but thats just my opinion

Just thought I would let you all know that my husband is very pleased with the 2 pairs of glasses which came today from fashionspecsdirect. We were a bit worried about ordering glasses online, but checked in boots the type of frame he wanted, and looked online and the 2 pairs cost £50.00 opposed to £180.00 in boots. They have a current offer on for a free pair of sunglasses which will be the same frame as the pair you order, check on line for details of the offer.0

Has anybody ordered from ispectacle before?
I ordered from them about 3 weeks ago and have received nothing, I have emailed them but had no reply and when ever I try to ring it just rings and rings before going to the fax machine.0 -
Amended to 12/6/07!
Have you emailed the company to let them know? If they get lost in the mail, I think they are still responsible for getting goods delivered to you. But if you don't tell them you've not received them - how are they to know? Was it sent recorded delivery? If so - there will be a tracking number for your to look up.“When the customer comes first, the customer will last”0
