I am thinking of purchasing some Prescription sunglasses from goggles4U and would appreciate some advice.

I would like some thin lenses as my prescription is -6/-5 and they offer 1.67 CR (plastic I think) or 1.71 glass. I realise it would depend which frames I choose but would I notice the difference? I assume plastic is safer and lighter than glass but would the glass ones be noticably heavier/thicker?

Also on the their website the ask for the % of tint-I assumed it would be 100% but is that what most people go for?

    Many thanks

    Hi,
I am an Optican with my own practice and would advise you, that the tinting of high index glass is not always successful,(you get too many surface reflections) they are heavy and not as safe as plastic. So please go for plastic, 1.67 will not tint as well as 1.60/1.61 index. Sunglass tint is normally 80%, this refers to how much light is cut out by the lens, don't go any more than this.
    I hope this is helpfull?

Very helpful-Thank you very much :T

I did wonder about the safety aspect and will go for the plastic 1.67

    Cheers

If you go for rimless specs it is best to have polycarb lenses, as both hi-index and transitions are quite brittle by comparison! It may be worth while contacting them to see if they we re-make the new glasses for you, though I think I know what the answer will be?

Hi, New member here, don't bite :)

Really interested in this idea, can't actually afford decent glasses and have been relying on NHS freebies. I had an eye test about 4 months ago, but I've lost my prescription. Could somebody from my family go down there and request another one, or won't they give it me?

Also, I'm eligible for a NHS voucher as I'm still in college. How do I prove I'm eligible for one of these?

BTW, has anybody used glassesdirect recently? I've read all the good things about them and want to make sure the service is still good.

    Hi Nicole.

I would ask them yourself and just be honest with them. Tell them you lost it! If they are at all empathetic, they'll just write you another one.

Does anyone know of a site that will fit lenses if the customer provides the frames? I'm finding it near-impossible to choose frames online but the difference in price between the lenses I need online and on the high street is huge.

    Many thanks

I know they usually have a second copy that they keep, maybe they could photocopy that for me? I don't really know what to say though if they ask me for a reason why I need my prescription? Could I just say its just for my personal records or something?

Really want to order the glasses of the site though, the frames are soo much better than mine!

    Heh,
    The prescription is yours.
If you feel awkward asking for it, then tell them that you are going away and want to have all your medical documents in order. There is nothing to be embarassed about.
If they refuse, then get another eye test ... if you are legible for an NHS freebie --- at the same optician
