For what it's worth, I bought my first pair of online glasses direct from Fashion Specs Direct a couple of weeks ago or so. Based on my excellent experience with them, I'm also buying the wife's glasses there, too.

I based my decision to buy from them not just on price (I paid £9.95 for mine!) but also, and equally as important in my view, on customer service, recommendation and quality of the glasses.

Have a look here for more comments about Fashion Specs Direct .

    Cheers, J.

Off on my hols in a week, thought I may have left it too late to buy new prescription glasses for the beach. Fashion Specs Direct
were recommended to me, and I like the more modern look of their frames.

They arrived in just a few days, and were perfect; in fact even better than I had hoped for !:j Can't praise them enough, highly recommend them - they even sent me an email confirming that they were on their way !!

I ordered a pair of specs from selectspecs.com, I emailed the company and asked (before I ordered) about their 'photochromic lenses' and how clear they were when un-activated. This is the reply:- Thank you for your enquiry, Photo-chromic lenses are almost as clear as standard plastic when deactivated, they do have approximately 5-10% absorption when deactivated. They filter out 100% of UVA and UVB, radiation, whether activated or not.

    Photo-chromic Lenses

I checked out the picture on the website and took it 'as is' and went ahead and ordered them. They came quickly and with out damage and that side I cannot fault, but I am unhappy with the lenses, they are not 'almost as clear' far from it. Have emailed the company and they will only offer a refund for the frames as per t&c's. I just feel that I bought these specs under a false pretence, is there anything I can do?????

They may improve as you use them more.
When the lenses are brand new they always show more 'tint' than after they have reacted a few times.

Some photochromics are better than other but for future reference Transitions(R) lenses are the best.

Can you not return them under the Distance Selling Act?

Many companies offer a no quibble guarantee, if in doubt in the future I would recommend ordering from one of these.
This sig has been left intentionally blank. ;)

sorry to hear that you aren't happy with your specs - in case you are thinking of replacing them, I got the transitions lenses (TM) and I have to say that they are vastly improved - you would never know that they aren't clear indoors, and they change quickly coming in and going out of sun.
My last specs were as you describe, so I know what you mean !

I thought all these sights had a "no quibble" guarantee ? That's one of things that encouraged me to buy mine in the first place !

THIRTY QUID? You're having a laugh. When I went into D&A the girl measured my PD with an electronic device. It took her all of five seconds and you have the cheek to charge £30 for that? Not that anyone would be stupid enough to go into a store and ask for the PD without having an eye test first.

Yes they could possibly fatal but as most people get fitted and measured by a sales assistant rather than a qualified optician I don't actually see where you are going with this.

You opticians need to get into the real world where the rest of us are living, we have plenty of other pulls on our hard earned cash. We can't all afford to put aside £300 for a new pair of glasses. What are we supposed to go without to buy these extortionately priced glasses? Heating? Electricity? Council Tax? Or do you think that we shoud go without buying a new pair of glasses when our prescriptions change because we can't afford it, instead of buying a cheap pair manufacturered to a very high standard in the Far East for instance which might possibly make our brains explode.

    Hi,
I've been testing eyes now for many years and have measured the p.d routinely in nearly every test I've done. Most opticians will do this, either with the frame they put on you (trial frame) or with the device that swings down in front of you (phoropter). This measurement is important when you have glasses but even more important that we get it right when we test you! So it should be written down on records that are taken when you are tested. You have every right to ask for copies of your records! So ask for them.
I have been asked many tims for the p.d measuremnt and give it every time, it causes so much bad will if you charge or refuse!
I have mentioned in other links on this website that I have come accross some very good and some not so good websites.
The p.d is important and gets more so with the higher the prescription, and is critical in some cases.
We have used an internet based company to make our glasses when our technician is away (https://www.ciliaryblue.com), they do reglazing and insist on a p.d measurement. This can be measured from your old glasses too, rather than using an average value. When it is done properly, safely and cheaply, then our Profession should have nothing to complain about!
So please be careful when you have your glasses made/reglazed, there are some good ones and some not.
    I hope this helps? :T
  • i have worn glasses/contact lenses since i was 17 (yes that is jus under 10 yrs!)recently i have had to alter my prescription. now my HC1 form is no use to me at all (waste of paper and trees if u ask me as it saves me nothing) but when it comes to my eyesight im not willing to scrimp. i shopped around, looked at boots, asda and so on but i found tht the best deal of all came from SPECSAVERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!for the princely sum of £15 a month i get a pair of monthly disposable lenses (toric lenses at tht) solutions and all aftercare ie checkups and replacements shud i lose one is included!!!!! i also got 50% of a pair of glasses from their £75+ range, i get half price prescription sunglasses and various other deals too. the service is top notch and i am actually able to ssee properly!!! 15 quid a month is a small price to pay for my eyes as i wont get another pair!!lol i even get my lenses posted to me every 3 months for no extra charge!!!!!!!!!!!!! all i had to pay out for was a eye test (wich if u check local papers or even bus tickets u can get for a 10er) and my glasses (wich were ment to b £85 but were reduced to £42.50 due to the fact i had signed up for contacts and paid my £15 a month via direct debit) on the odd time where iv not had the funds to pay the direct debit iv simply suspended it and at one point i paid a months charge in cash!!!once the funds start flowin again iv reinstated the debit and no probs so far!!!!!give them a try!!!!!!!!!

I just used the voucher from another thread for https://www.fashionspecsdirect.co.uk seemed to good to be true - it accepted the voucher AND they gave me free prescription sunglasses with my order.
Haven't received them yet - but they did send me an email confirming my prescription and said they were going to post them in the next day or so.
    Amazing if true !

Are you sure it accepted BOTH? Aren't they mutually exclusive?

I am thinking of purchasing some Prescription sunglasses from goggles4U and would appreciate some advice.

I would like some thin lenses as my prescription is -6/-5 and they offer 1.67 CR (plastic I think) or 1.71 glass. I realise it would depend which frames I choose but would I notice the difference? I assume plastic is safer and lighter than glass but would the glass ones be noticably heavier/thicker?

Also on the their website the ask for the % of tint-I assumed it would be 100% but is that what most people go for?

    Many thanks
