  • I can get osiris 497 frames or Tommy Hilfiger Tho2 frames off ebay for £20 or so. I've tried them on in Specsavers and like them. I don't see those frames on any of the sites I've visited so would rather buy the frames and get the lenses. Does anyone know, where is good value to do me some lenses? - I have mild astigmatism.

    Can anyone help? Thanks,

    Mike

Either use https://www.spex4less.com or https://www.justrimless.com for your reglaze. Ive used both companies and have found both to be excellent.

You might be able to get a free AR coating from spex4less or 25% discount from justrimless if you order before the end of the month.

    Expect to pay about £15.

    Hope this helps.

just checked justrimless and their normal regalze price is £9.99 before discount so you should be able to get basic uncoated lenses fitted for £7.50.

    Dear all,

I've just ordered a 2nd pair of glasses for my mum from this company for £17.50 including P&P, free case, etc. My 1st purchase was 2 years ago with her old prescription.

    http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk/

Even the cheap glasses look great! All the info you need to purchase glasses is on your prescription apart from your pupilary distance, which you can either measure yourself or ask your optician to do for you when you go for an eye test. Information about the length of the glasses arms, etc is on the inside arm of your existing glasses.

    No, i'm not on commission!

    Vijay

PS if you also want a free eye test http://www.danda.co.uk/opticians/promotions/detail.asp?campaign=4720"

I hope people find my opinion of some use :j My mum is really pleased and she thinks the 'wine colour' arms she chose are cool! :D

um, am reading this with interest, as my 4yr old wears glasses and has done for 1 year. Due to his age (its an occupational hazard,) he is a/constantly yanking them off in a boyish manner and bending/breaking the arms, and b/falling over and stratching or chipping them.....unfortunately the nhs only cover 1 pair of glasses a year and i still have to pay extra to get the thinned out lenses for any pair he has. (his prescription is mighty strong, +6.5 and +6, not to mention the fact in the summer he has no sunglasses as they usually cost another £70 on top. (he gets sad that he can't have bob the builder or thomas sunglasses like his friends too!)

I was thinking its bad enough now having to repair his glasses with sellotape etc until the year is up and i can claim another pair on the nhs, but i thought when he's 16+ and we have to pay for all of them, that i would be left bankrupt!!
Will have a look at these sites and see if any of them cater for kids, would be worth spending £20 etc to have a spare pair.

Next stop: house repairs, holiday fund, replace our very old cars, more financial security/early retirement savings.🤞
  • Hi clarew,

Speak to your opticians as the under the NHS you should get money towards the cost of replacement specs , if the frame was a 'free' frame you shouldnt pay anything. (the lenses can be swapped over)

With reference to the thickness of the lenses, where do you get his specs at the moment ? If you visit an opticians with an in-store lab they should be able to get the lenses pretty thin without paying the extra cost. You dont mention if you have had a pair made at standard thickness and you may be surprised at how reasonable they look.

You wont be able to buy specs on-line until he is 16 but if you speak to your optician and explain that you feel he needs a spare pair *most* will give an additional voucher to cover the cost.

    Hello,

First time i am using this website and i would like to briefly say how i used a particular website to buy spex very cheap and they are the best quality glasses i have ever had in my life. I have been wearing glasses for 20 years and each time i used to go to my opticians, my new spex would cost me atleast £150. Alot of money for me when that is half of my weekly wage.

I went on https://www.glassescomplete.co.uk 2 weeks ago, this was only by chance, i think via google or yahoo. So after much thought i phoned them up to see wether it was true what they were saying. They were so helpful and professional that i was already impressed by their customer advisor.

That same day i went to have an eyetest at specsavers, charged me nearly 20 quid. They tried their best to sell me glasses, But i simply got my prescription of them and phoned glassescomplete up as soon as i got back to work.

The sales advisor on the phone ordered the glasses for me that i wanted from their site. It took about 15 minutes.
I got a "2 for 1" offer from them: it cost me £32.50 for two pairs and that included 1 pair that was a designer pair.....
oh yeah and scratch coating aswell.
When i got them they were ten times better than what i expected. I got them in roughly 7 days.....never getting ripped off again.

I recommend them to everyone. Their website is called https://www.glassescomplete.co.uk

Also, I have tried using ebay before for glasses but the problem i found with ebay was that the frame was cheap, but then the prescription leneses from specsavers used to cost me about 70 pounds, thats standard plastic, as my prescription is not that bad.....70 quid is too much.

I think i am glassescomplete's favorite customer as ive told them how great they are a million times and i must have recommended atleast 5 workcolleagues already........power to the online shoppers.

I did too! Our coach guide advised anyone who wear glasses or lenses to buy them in Cyprus as eye tests were free and glasses were so cheap!
I went to an opitian in Ayai Napa a few years ago and they were fantastic. Eye test was done with state of the art technology, they were far more thorough than Specsavers back home. I got a lovely D&G designer frame with Ultra Lite Hoy lenses before they were avail in the UK all for about 150. They kept my presciption on file and were happy to supply me me again if I gave them a current presciption and the style number of any frame. I even got some of my tax back for them at airport. Considering it only cost us £500 for the pair of us to go there for a week I was chuffed!

    Just spotted this post.

A friend of mine went to Cypress and spent £300 on a pair of rimless glasses, six weeks back home in the UK they became very loose. He was told by an Optician that although they looked very good quality on the surface they were in fact poorly made. And although he would repair them as best he could he couldn't give any guarantee how long the repair would last.

He would have saved more money and had less hassle if he had bought them from a reputable UK based Internet provider. Such as https://www.glassesdirect.co.uk https://www.spex4less.com or https://www.nuglasses.co.uk
  • first post!
i was about to buy new glasses, when a salesman for a healthcare scheme came to my work to try and sell it to us all. they sell different levels of membership(and therefore cost), and we were honest and jokingly asked if it was possible to pay a higher amount initially (to gain a higher allowance) then drop the membership level after a month or two - which the salesman said we could do! this helped him sell it.
so i signed up, paid £40 at premium level for 2 months, used it to pay for my glasses (which cost £250, as my eyesight is bad!), then dropped my level and payments to the lowest, which is £6 a month.they can`t stop you doing this - i just said that level was too high for my needs(but made sure i got the money paid for the glasses first). i now use the lowest level for my dentist and it helps pay towards my contact lenses (and can be used for chiropodist etc).
there are a lot of companies that provide this type of healthcare, and it doesn`t need to be offered through your work (i think asda does one). hope this is helpful.
