I have been using this excellent site for a while now but never posted on these forums. However I got hold of some useful information which i'm hoping will be of use to u guys. I came across some oakley frames (model number OA11-806 and retailing for $165 on the site) ‏on glassescrafter.com.I decided to look elsewhere on the web (like all good money savers!) to get a price comparison and see if it was available in other colours. However I couldn't find that particular frame number anywhere so I decided to email oakley themselves to see whether they could help me. Here is their reply:

Many of the on-line spectacle suppliers will reglaze your glasses for you, there is one that does reglaze-only and they are as a consequence cheap and know what they are doing, I use them in my own practice on occasion, look for www.ciliaryblue.com. I hope this helps?

I search the forum and this thread, but I can't seem to see any mention of these guys - Specs-by-Post

I only want to reglaze, and their price seems okay [it's either these or ispectacle I've been looking at mainly]

You have to download a pdf order form to complete for reglazing and then send it off with your frames. They *look* okay, and the pdf is professional and everything looks pretty promising, but I've been fooled by that before.

Has anyone used this company, or heard anything about them?

Hi there,
I have to get some new glasses and will be looking at Martins report indepth tomorrow. Just had a quick browse at some sites recommended here and cant find any cheap online sellers that do ultra thin lenses cheaper than £35. I need 1.67 I think.

Hi Everyone,
Just taken the plunge and ordered some swimming goggles (prescription) from https://www.sportspectacles.co.uk I'll update with my expriences afterwards. These seem to be off the shelf items, and were only £30. I've seen them a lot more expensive.
I have some glasses (inc. bi-focals for all the optician nay-sayers) from spex4less which I'm very pleased with. I was about to use them again for the goggles, but found them much more expensive.
Just my experience so far. I'm normally a contact-lens wearer, so glasses are only secondary for me.

I think £35 and up is the going rate for thinner lenses.

Bear in mind that they start at less than 1.67 - it depends on what the company's interpretation of 'thinner' is on their site. Look for the soecific definition (like 1.67 for example as you have done). They also go a lot higher than this for those who would like it (and the cost will reflect this, too).

Also - consider the material of the lenses. For instance, rimless lenses use polycarbonate (typically) because they are stronger. They are also thinner (strength for strength) than regular lenses and most online companies promote this as being able to supply free thinner lenses. Nothing wrong with that, but bear it in mind!

Finally, take into account the whole package of what you are buying. Don't save a couple of quid on cheaper thinner lenses when you may be buying an inferior - and more expensive - frame to house them!

I had my eyes tested today at a local independent optician and was told I need bifocals. The chap suggested I try varifocals but the extra charge would be £100:eek: Is this about right for varifocals or should I shop around? Having read the article and discussion on here I understand it is quite difficult to get varifocals online and would be better sticking to the high street. I don't mind paying the money but £100 sounded a lot on top of the lenses and frames.
