I have got a problem which is probably a bit too complicated to go into here, but there is one question I can ask to try and understand what is happening..I have astigmatism in both eyes and also have a prism which for at least the past 10 years on my right eye has been corrected at 1.0.

Had a test at optician A couldn't find any suitable frames so bought complete glasses at optician B for just shy of £500 for two pairs of varifocals with a prism in both eyes and all the other corrections I need. However, I can't see through them at all. Optician B sent them away as they agreed the prism was set badly, and they have come back, and it is worse. Checked my prescription against some old ones I had and noticed that the correction on the right eye has gone from 1.0 to 0.25 whcih they said was possibly a bit unusual. So that's my question, after many years of wearing a strong correction is it likely that my eyes could have improved enough to have that reduced by 75% in one go?

OPtician A (who apparently use locums) agree that it might be a bit unusual and so are willing to retest my eyes on Monday. Meanwhile as luck would have it (and doesn't fate play wonderful tricks sometimes) I fell badly this morning and have completely wrecked my only prescription glasses. Optician has patched me up as best he can but as I was wearing rimless the fix is very delicate and I have been warned that they may not even last the week. Any new prescription ordered on Monday will take 2 weeks to be made (I have special lenses which I believe come from Germany) and I go on holiday in 9 days time. I can't see a thing without glasses, and all I have with the correct presription is a pair of very dark sunglasses. I also have a pir of pink lenses ones I bought from a shop in Hong Kong mentioned on here..and that prescription is only about 4 years old so is usable for distance at least.

Can I have a bit of a cry now please...

  • I have to say, after reading about the benefits of our high street opticians that I have now purchsed three pairs of glasses from Glasses Direct and I cannott praise them highly enough. Even when I had made a mistake with the lenses they sent me a replacement pair at no extra charge. Prices were from £15 -£25 and the fit and style were great. I will continue to use them over high street opticians as they are great value for money

Wow! Cheap as chips - bear in mind the delivery charge on top of that, though. However, the company I work for can beat that in it's normal prices!

Fashion Specs Direct have prescription glasses starting at only £9.95. Hang on - make that from £8.76 if you use the Christmas 12% discount code! They also deliver the glasses direct to your home.

Hi I've read loads of here but not sure if it's already mentioned but I've found a discount code "lifestyle" that takes off £14 at the checkout!

Yes they used to be good value for money, but not any more.

I visited their website this week and noticed they have started charging £10 for the anti scratch coating which the vast majority of other sites incude in the standard cost of their glasses. So Glasses Direct are selling glasses for £25 that other companies are selling for £15!! - which makes them very poor value for money. In fact like for like Glasses Direct must now be one of the most expensive UK companies online to buy glasses from.

You have got to be careful, always check what's included in the price and that you are comparing like with like.
  • NHS spectacle vouchers must be issued by the optometrist who tested your eyes, but following the sight test you are entitled to ask for this and take it to any other optician.
  • First post here guys

I am looking for the cheapest way to have lenses for my new prescription put in to my glasses. I dont need frames as I two pairs of glasses I like and just need the lenses updated. I have an HC2 certificate for help with health costs as I am on benefits. Any suggestions as to how to do this the cheapest way?

All advice very gratefully received. Thanks

PS I have a straight forward prescription - nothing too fancy required

Don't know about other places, but at specsavers you will be able to get one frame glazed with standard plastic lenses free of charge. If you have had a sight test elsewhere you will need to bring the yellow "GOS3" form (you may need to ask the optician for this) as it is this which gives you the money off.

If you want the 2nd pair done it would cost £39.
