Have any of you tried getting treatment from a Chiropractor? The Chiro's that I attend have treated children with ADHD with very positive results.

I saw a CP with my son in the early days - he said that this is why he cried a lot, because the bones of his skull were still slightly fused - his birth was quite traumatic for him. It did OK (you get 3 free sessions of cranial massage for babies under 1) and he settled a little when he was lying down, but I have not been since he was older. Can I ask where you can find info on this as I have never heard anything about this. I am open to anything that might help.

If you have specifi problems with your children at school then you can find more information here:

I have started going to a support group - do you have anything like this near you? It makes so much difference to have other people to speak to and you can pass advice to others. Someone mentioned not needing to go to a group but the advice you have to offer make the world of difference to someone else who is not coping. I am coping just fine (OK, we all have bad days but my son is as how he is) it is nice to speak to people who understand and do not judge. I've also had invites to a special Science day with Robots at the university for ADHD/ASD kids - something I would not have known about before so I would say to take advantage of a support group as it gives lots of opportunities that you would not otherwise know about.

Also to add, my son has just been awarded a blue badge, they do not give this for his condition as such but because he has not fear of the roads and sense of danger and it is to keep him - and other drivers - safe, because he runs off the minute he realises I do not have a hold of his arm. If you have this problem with your child then you might want to consider a badge. You apply to your council, they will want to see your doctors letters and theycalled me to speak to me, but it just means if DS runs off we will not be parked in the road. He just has to get to the car and we have some dreadful car parks in this area.

This is the link to my Chiropractors web page that mentions ADHD. http://www.thespinalhealthclinic.com/index.php?p=30951 Jo Lancaster is very interested in the treatment of children especially babies and may be able to point you in the right direction of finding out more and someone near you. Also try doing a search on web for ADHD and chiropractic.

That is interesting. When my son was a baby it was much different but I do not think that he would want his head or back being touched now (he is almost 5), he only lets the hairdresser we have had for 3 years touch his hair and even then he has to be dragged out of hiding and held down to have it done. Likewise I am not sure they would be able to get him to sit still for long enough, it would have to be 5 minute sessions.

My son has Autism too so the touching thing would be an issue I guess, he would not even let the doc measure his head, I've never given it much thought. It would cost me a fortune for me to go back and forth so he would get used to the CP. We found out about the cranial massage through a friend, but we thought more this might help with his crying as he did cry a lot when he was little.
  • try a big tub of lego/k'nex or other construction toy. That way the child still gets to set the agenda as it were whilst the activity is still structured in your eyes. I have a 14 year old son with extremely severe ADHD.
  • I know Caudwell Charitable Trust give help for disabled children.
  • If you get dla are you claiming carers allowance aswell? The two go hand in hand really so you if not you should be entitled to this also. My nephew has adhd and my brother also got the mobility side of the dla which entitled him to a new car every 3 years.

Me again. I wanted to let you know about these books by http://www.parenting.org.uk/ the list of books is here: http://www.parenting.org.uk/Range.aspx?id=3

I was shown one of these books by my Childs Care Worker and have noticed that they do a set of 8 for £45 or they are around £6 each but cover ADHD, ASD, Special Needs, Anger, etc.... Because of the postage I thought I might as well get a set of 8 as they even have one for teenagers which will help when the kids get older. Anyway, I have just ordered my set so I can tell you more when they arrive but they seem very good from what I have been shown in her workbook.

    Hope that helps someone else.
  • Hi all
Not been on here for a bit just to give you an update. my DS is doing great , school are really supporting him and it is showing in his work. I went to parents evening and looked through his work and at the start of the year you were lucky if he completed 3 lines of work a day but can now complete ½ a page of writing which is amazing for him. He still has bad days at school but it is out weighed by the positive ones. I no longer dread home time were the teacher would ask can I have a word (I am sure you have all been there).
Don’t get me wrong I still need to remind him 10 times to get his lunch box and get half was down the road and have to turn back as he has forgot it again but I understand ADHD a lot more and something’s I can not change in him and have just learned to live with it.
I had the disability database round and they have been fantastic. They have link me our with a play scheme he and my other DS can got to at Easter and summer and holidays that are run to help build on his social skills. I have also been given a pack on all the local service and organisation, they linked me into a dentist who is specialised to treat children with disabilities. He has been once and he is going again next month for a polish and to look at all the different instruments they use.
I have also change my dining room into a playroom for the kids. I would recommend this to any one if you have the room in your house if not just to save you sanity and have your own peaceful living room back when needed.
He is currently obsessed with the yellow car game( every time you see a yellow car you have to shout YELLOW CAR, great for trips in the car) which was great when we first started playing it but I play it that often with him I found myself shouting Yellow Car to myself on the way to work.
Alex I hope things are going better for you and your DS.
    Take care
Keep fighting, and remember they may bring you tears but there is never a dull moment with a ADHD child.
