thanks for that, i am still waiting for my card, pin and reader, fingers crossed it comes soon as i need to add the payees

does any one know, if the pin and card come first can other card readers be used with them as a mate of mine has one from natwest and if others can be used as well, may ask to borrow hers, i ordered mine on the 6th and have yet to receive any of them

    Not sure about that.

They did tell me over the phone that they will allow one withdrawal via a telephone instruction for up to 10K while you are waiting for the card reader/pin/card. Did I read earlier someone report something similar?

I am still waiting for the card reader and the 15 days is up on Monday.

Incidentally if anyone thinks they have been mislead by a financial services company advertisement or website info they can report it to the FSA by going to

    http://www.moneymadeclear.fsa.gov.uk/about_the_fsa/advertising/financial_advertising.html

and click on report a misleading advertisement via the link on the RHS and fill in the on-line form.

I am not saying Tesco advertising is misleading but just informing you of your rights - it's for you to make that judgement.

Personally I still think this is a good place to put money because of the interest rate and because of Faster Payments. And it terms of security the card reader does make sense, but would have been nice to know about it at the beginning.

I think it's cropped up before (perhaps on the other Tescos thread?), and I'm sure people say the other card readers work fine...

As long as you have the card and pin it will work with any card reader.

    Oh My god................................
This account has to be the worst set up ever. I applied about 3 weeks ago on line, and i still have not seen my account open.

I am now in the process of stopping the account as, i mainly opened for the clubcard points, and I doubt i will be able to get my money in before the end of the month -
I have jsut received a letter saying -
Thanks for choosing tesco - heres your account details, I have to register for internet banking( being a internet only account, you would of thought by actually opening the account, you would automatically be registered)

So yeah very dissapointing, glad i only sent a £1.00 cheque, worth losing a £1.00 to get out of this shambles!!!!
I have recently opened a Bradford and Bingley and Birmingam Midshires savings account - applied on a monday, up and running by the monday after.........

You have the account details so you can now pay money in from your linked account if you want the points. I did that as soon as I had the details. Depends if you want to pull the money out again right after the qualifying date, which means you need the card and reader.

I gather that, if you're desperate to withdraw funds and haven't received your card reader, etc., Tesco Finance will arrange this for you over the phone (and so they should ).

I agree, worst account ever to set up. I applied online in early October and haven't received my card reader yet ... though I did get the card and pin last week.
    Wins since 2009 = £17,600

    MANY THANKS TO ALL OPS

Sent a £1 cheque dated 26/10. Letter from them dated 30/10 received 3/11. Sent off signature etc 5/11. Received passcode 12/11 then dipped my toe with a £10 bank transfer from A&L which was instant into the Tesco account. All in all a bit sluggish but not painfully slow like some ISA transfers.

Just waiting now for NR to manage to move some money to my A&L account so I can transfer it to tesco.

Have applied for the card and reader (which is not made obvious that you need it in the advertising blurb) but as the point of a savings account is to keep the money in is not a major concern at the moment.

Most online bank accounts operate this type of "random letter from memorable word" security, it's far more secure than entering the full password.

It prevents all manner of ways of hackers from getting your enitre password, although nothing is 100% secure, it does add a significant layer of security.

I have to disagree. The banks don't understand probability (which could be why they are in the mess they are now). A 3 letter password is so low security that is possible to brute force the attack. Say numbers and letters, (some sites are not case sensitive and most user probably only use lower case), 36^3 = 46k. And rather than look at trying to guess one persons account, turn it around and say you have the user names for 46k users. You're in WITHOUT know the password, just on the probability of guess right.

The cutting of the password is meant to prevent keyloggers but in reality it just makes the keylogger has to be a bit smarter and opens the possibility of brute forcing, as well as being a PITA for customers. A sensible approach would be lump security JUST on setting up payees. Do you care if someone pays off your credit card bill for you? No. The only real risk is that someone sets up a new payee and empties your account. Since setting up payees is rare than that can be a more secure procedure without annoying customers so much.
