    What an odd post!

Why is it odd? The poor (sic) already receive allowances (via credits or benefits). Why should they receive special tariffs?

There's no 'special tariffs' with BTBasic like are applied to the blind and over 70s with the TV licence. Those are legal duties.

BT has made a decision for business reasons only. If you don't like it use another private company or become a shareholder and try and get a vote on it.

Saeed, he will have to go on the standard (unlimited weekend) tariff and then apply to switch to BT Basic (likely to take an additional 2 months approx after connection). If he takes up the 18 month contract for "free" connection it should (according to their T&C) be possible to switch from "unlimited weekend" to "BT Basic" tariff without that being a break of the contract - as long as he keeps the line for the 18 months.

Thank you for the info. Graham but I phoned up BT basic and they said I'll have to pay the connection fee of £122.
Please could you advise me how to approach this matter with BT.

    Thank you

I don't think they are doing a "free" connection offer at the moment. I expect they will bring it back at some time in the future if you can wait. Last time they had such an offer the T&C said you could switch to a different tariff (like BT basic) without breaking the 18 month term condition provided you kept the line for that period of time.

Their last offer (which expired on 30-Sept) is described at:

Can you get broadband if you are on BT Basic. Phoned BT and they said if wanted broadband with bt or any other provider would need to pay full line rental of £12.50pm but reading previous posts and also the BT Basic online leaflet, seems you can get broadband.
    Thanks

Yes, you can have broadband and still qualify for BT Basic (see page 1 post #1 of this thread).

Some BT staff have poor knowledge of BT Basic. Make sure you talk directly to the BT Basic department.

Just checking to see if there was any recent thoughts on BT Basic service, and downloaded the most recent leaflet from the link in post #373 (p.19)

Checking that - I see they've a 'Crystal Mark' stamp is at the end of their brochure implying the use of clear and plain English. However, I find this statement about Broadband use with BT Basic very misleading .....

"Can I have broadband with BT Basic?

Yes. Customers of our new BT Basic service can also enjoy the benefits
of BT Total Broadband. You can take any one of the standard BT Total
Broadband packages, which means you can choose which one best
meets your needs and your budget. If you do take a broadband service,
we will add this to the BT Basic line rental of £13.50 every three months.

You can find out more about our broadband packages and make your
    order at www.bt.com/broadband

Please note: BT Total Broadband is not available in all areas.
Conditions, including a minimum contract period, apply."

Which, if you we were not switched on about all this, does NOT give the impression in clear English, that any OTHER (cheaper) broadband services from a variety of providers, are available, at no penalty.

More confusion :-( Or is it more sinister?

Oh and how do you friends on the standard services feel about

    - The change in EVENING call period, shifting from 6pm -6am to 7pm-7am?

    - And the standard set up call charge increasing from 9.3p to 9.9p?

    - And standard Daytime call charge going up from 5.4 to 5.9p /min (~10%) ?

    All from 1st April 2010.

Read about and check it all on your own letter - you did get one? Anyway it's all on the REAR of the page, in smaller type AFTER the signature ........sneaky eh?

Customer service and care, and value for money still going down in my estimation .....
