You can apply for BT Basic by calling FREEPhone 0800 783 1675 and asking for an application form.

You can pay your bill anyway you like...but is there still a nice fat charge for doing so of 4.50 if it's not DD ?

If your a BT Basic customer and you dont want to pay by d/d you will not be charged the payment processing fee of £4.50 every three months. BT basic is exempt from it.

I just had a look at the site mentioned as "having all the details" http://www.btplc.com/inclusion/Needhelp/BTBasic/

Nothing about broadband except calls to "internet" are charged, and nothing specific about using another ISP, nor about services like caller ID.

    Trust the source, Luke:

    Or
The charge does not apply to customers on BT's special rates for low income and vulnerable customers, such as In Contact Plus, the Light User Scheme, Pay&Call and BT Basic.
    which is from

Which is exactly what I did last MAY, and three times since.
As reported earlier, BT did respond by turning down the application because the form was not returned in time. What form? The one I've never received from them. Work that one out!!!

I've just spent 20 minutes searching BT's convoluted websites - and not found it.

I easily found text on 'how to complete the application form' - but no form!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
