On Monday I reported that no BT Basic application form had been received after 12 WEEKS! Today, Wednesday, my mother received a letter from BT informing her that she was not eligible for the BT Basic Service . . . . . .wait for it. . . . . .because she had not completed her application form and returned it within the specified timescales!
Just HOW do you handle such incompetence?
And there was I. . . .thinking no-one could possibly match Tiscali for such gross stupidity!
Why can't BT just put a pdf of the Application Form online?

I'd suggest everyone keeps sending requests via THIS online form (once a day should get their attention eventually).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

This is what I've been warning against from the start. There will be many old folk dropping dead when they get their first quarterly Basic bill. The call charges are worse than many PAYG mobile rates. This is an exercise in screwing old folk who use their phones more than once every 3 days and TBH should be looked at by the regulator...

For anyone with an elderly relative on BT Basic I suggest you make sure they are aware of 0800 443311 followed by option 1 then option 2 to check the cost of calls since the last bill. It's always about 48 hours out of date (same as the online account recent calls list) but at least it gives a clue if their call costs are too high for this tariff to be worthwhile.
  • It seems that this tariff is only worthwhile for people who make few or no calls.

ive just enquiried and got someone helpful and polite in Stoke.

It seems unless you hardly make any calls its not worthwhile. The cost of your calls will double if you go over your allowance! Your bill will be more.

You can try it though and see how you go!

I personally like BT as they give free caller display plus you get a phonebook.

    Well done, Vroomfondel.
  • My mother-in-law aged 94, deaf and unable to speak, lives alone so has phone line solely for emergency but as has just a bit too much savings is not eligible yet for any benefits. Current average annual bill under the LUS is £57. Just had letter giving one months notice of termination. Not able get BT Basics so told will go on to Unlimited Weekend Plan - annual cost at todays' prices £135.00 - an increase of £78 or 136% to make perhaps 6 calls a year. Guess what? Going to cancel the line and buy a nice large button mobile phone for £59. Hang your heads in shame BT! Where is your social conscience?

You're going to give a deaf and mute 94 year old a mobile phone? Interesting.

Your relative should be in receipt of plenty of benefits if they actually need extra help and if they don't need the help and have too much money [to qualify] then they need to pay for the full service BT (a private company) supply. Your realtive doesn't get free holidays, plasma TVs or free deliveries of groceries from Tesco either I assume?

See if there's a possiblitly of getting Attendance Allowance or carer's allowance. You relative will also be getting a fairly high state pension due to age and that can go towards the phone cost too.
