I happened to be in Asda last Sunday morning at about 4.30 am. There was only one check out operator on (3 shoppers at the till) and she couldn't be more helpful.

On rare occasions I have challenged the price of goods at the checkout (probably my fault), changed my mind and have been pleasantly told, don't worry we will put it back.

I do, however, get a bit annoyed as I go round the store and find people have abandoned fresh or frozen products on various shelves. If I realise I don't want a product I have put in my trolley, I return to that section to return. After all these items will be scrapped which ultimately increases my shopping bill.

The self scanners - can't comment as I am scared of them and would rather go to the checkout queue!

Exactly, this is what people don't seem to realise. The more mess some make the more it costs everyone.

I think you have a bit of a problem - this has come across in several threads you contribute to. I think you are rather provocative. uktim29 has retail experience and he does not have to disclose where if he doesn't want to. I also don't always agree with his comments. I have had some bad customer service - two checkout operators talking to each other without paying attention to me as the customer. However, I feel that most of the time if I am smiley and friendly I get the same back from the assistant. Thank you at the end of the transaction and another smile never goes wrong.

I have experienced some rather poor customer service over the years, managed to resolve it mostly amicably by not going in full guns blazing and not demanding compensation. After all the folk I am dealing with are only carrying out their employers T&Cs. Yes mistakes happen if young kids and students work over the weekend. They are probably not quite up to speed with the company rules.

The only time I got compo was 8 years ago when an expensive wallpaper did not hang properly and once the rep came out totally agreed. Unfortunately I had to threaten the retailer with small claims court but finally paid out for the paper, plus having to get decorator to come in again to redo the decoration. I made nothing extra.

My DD is off work with stress, being at a well known bank call centre, and the abuse she has received is appalling.

    No, lets write an answer.

All the antique shops I've worked in, they said that after the "don't let fat people sit on chairs" part of the training!:rotfl:

Maybe I'm missing something crucial here (and there'll be someone along to point it out no doubt) but all jobs have a job description right?
Just to point out - it's not in my job description. In fact a lot of them are deliberately vague...
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

So why then do the many retail workers who have posted on this thread have such a problem with doing what must surely be in their job description?

I'll answer that but in respect of the cases I quoted, eg pure laziness, snobbery etc. The bog standard shop floor title is Sales Assistant, not Sales Servant!

I think you've just written what is often a classic case of customers making staffs job descriptions up just to suit themselves. Right up to senior management level they do expect customers to treat staff/property with a little of respect. Now don't try to twist what I've said here, I know how people like to do that, I've simply said a little respect or a basic level of respect. Walking into a shop and tossing items all over the place, maybe chucking a frozen item onto a random shelf so it has to be written off is not a basic level of respect.

Most large companies do well because they are good at one thing, protecting losses. To achieve this you need also to have customers that aren't going to jeopardize this.

I don't see what all the fuss is about? It seems to suggest that behaving with a basic level of respect in a shop seem to upset some people. They end up coming up with excuses like above as to why they shouldn't have to do this.

who has mentioned compo, yes i do have a problem with uktim not backing up his clap trap.
  • Seems to me a lot of angry retail workers who arnt happy in there jobs get things off there chest on this site.
The issue here wasnt any one being nasty, but the sales assistant telling a customer what to do as ive said NO shop tells there staff to tell a customer to put it back apart in uktim world and a few others, it is part of there job .
